Elderberries (Sambucus nigra) have been used for centuries as a natural remedy for various health conditions, including the flu, colds, diabetes and more. Because of its immune-boosting properties, this magical berry has been known to significantly reduce the symptoms of the flu when taken within the first 48 hours of onset. Not only is it a miracle fruit, but elderberry syrup is also delicious as a topping for waffles and pancakes or mixed into teas.

Cinnamon, ginger, lemon and honey also boast antiviral and anti-inflammatory benefits that help boost the healing power and pair well with the taste of elderberries, making this easy-to-make syrup a super tasty (and healthy!) treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried elderberries
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 cup fresh, sliced ginger
  • 1/2 cup raw honey
  • 1 lemon

Instructions

In a saucepan, combine the dried elderberries, water, cinnamon, ginger and lemon. Place the pan on low heat. Bring to a low simmer and continue to simmer until the liquid is reduced by half. Remove the pan from heat and strain well into a glass decanter or measuring cup. Stir in the honey. Pour into a bottle and store in the fridge up to one month.

Enjoy!
