For the Love of Hilary
Designer Hilary Farr and real estate agent David Visentin go up against each other in every episode of Love It or List It. They each try to sway homeowners to either: 1) stick with the home they already own à la Hilary's renovation or 2) find their perfect new home via David's real estate skills. Ahead, every time Hilary made us love it — no listing necessary.

See Your Space in a New Light
Never underestimate Hilary’s ability to rethink a space. Formerly, this living room had an outdated fireplace and was completely closed off from the adjacent kitchen. Once Hilary got her hands on the blueprints, she transformed the entire back of the home into an open-concept floor plan, anchored by an incredible dining room. With cushy banquet seating and an extra-long table, this family of five now has an everyday gathering spot, as well as a space to host 20 of their nearest and dearest.

Find Function in the Unused
Remember that time Hilary totally transformed this underused room? We sure do. From the built-in desk to the ultra-cozy window seat, this room now serves double duty as a workstation and hangout. In addition to amping up the style of the space with chevron-laid flooring, industrial-inspired accents and eye-catching patterns, she also maximized storage with open shelving and cabinetry to keep the mess hidden away.

Create an Anchor of Style
Before Hilary stepped into this home, the husband-and-wife homeowners were diametrically opposed to their home’s future. He hated everything about it and was ready to move on, while she could see the potential of a Hilary renovation. And oh, what a remodel! For the underutilized front room, Hilary created a peaceful library to function as the wife’s workspace, as well as a quiet reading or studying spot. Gorgeous dark-blue built-ins anchor the room around a cozy sofa, while providing always-needed storage.

Make Sure You Have What You Need
What works when a family first moves into a home doesn’t always work forever. Hilary’s job is to take a beloved space and build it into what the family needs now, and this family of five needed a dining room that would accommodate them all, as well as friends and guests. Banquet seating paired with five upholstered chairs guarantees more than enough seating and, of course, Hilary didn’t forget function. Drawers under the banquette and overhead cabinets max out the storage possibilities in this space.

Concoct a Dreamy Retreat at Home
Sometimes, Hilary plays therapist. These homeowners were still traumatized by their last remodel — 15 years ago. So, Hilary had to work her magic to guide them through the process and create a home they adored. Step one: transforming the third floor into a gorgeous retreat. Not only did she design a beautiful main bedroom (more than doubling their closet storage), she wowed everyone with a jaw-dropping main bathroom renewal. The massive skylight in the walk-in shower, the soft gray double vanity, the marble tile underfoot (plus, there’s a soaker tub around the corner!) — we fell in love at first sight.

Revamp Your Basement
Basements aren’t Hilary's favorite, though it's awfully hard to tell. For this busy family with kids, the basement was a catchall of everything that didn’t fit on the upper floors. Post Hilary, it’s a hyper-functional and creative space for grownups and littles. Smart shelving and cabinets provide ample storage, while a built-in desk gives Mom a place to work while the kids play or watch TV. The space also doubles as a guest room when needed. With light and airy walls and flooring, you’d never know you were in a basement.
Craft a Not-So-Utilitarian Space
Once upon a time, laundry was overtaking this couple’s household. Enter Hilary. By changing a door to a window and stealing a bit of space from the neighboring powder room, she was able to give the homeowners a massive laundry room. And though functionality in spaces like this one is key, you don't have to sacrifice on style. Forest-green cabinetry, crisp white countertops and elongated hexagon floor tiles infuse the space with serenity.
Establish Solid Ground
This episode had us all a little stressed. The house had a drastic slope, and with the help of an engineer, the homeowners discovered their house was built on top of what used to be a river — they were basically sitting on sand! So, one side was settling more than the other. Fortunately, Hilary and her team were able to stabilize the house, level it out and create a stunning kitchen. No dropped onions rolling to the other side of the house here. A waterfall island centers the space, which is wrapped in natural wood cabinetry. Ample pantry space keeps everything on hand and stowed away. Even the refrigerator is hidden behind paneling.
Fashion the Perfect Happy Hour
A dated home is no one’s idea of a fun gathering space. In order to meet this modern couple’s needs, Hilary redesigned the living space with sleek furnishings, comfy seating and a fully stocked wet bar. Whether relaxing with a nightcap, inviting a few close friends over or hosting a cocktail party for 20, their new living room is ready.

Have a Moment With Wallpaper
Everyone deserves a restful place to retreat at the end of the day. Here, Hilary used a soothing palette of sage and cream to take this bedroom from once-blah to serene and cozy. Wallpaper brings instant texture and just-right pattern to the space.
Redo for the Littlest
With a home bursting at the seams and a baby on the way, Hilary tackled a big reno for this family. Her one surprise? Designing a nursery for the newest family member. The scenic mountain vista is a dreamy backdrop for the nature-inspired space, where Hilary mixed in loveable animal linens and a rug teeming with colorful insects.

Go All Out in the Right Space
Tiny spaces don't go unnoticed. In fact, Hilary creates some of her boldest looks in the smallest spots. In this case, a half bath with petite square footage turned out to be the perfect opportunity to make a statement with floral wallpaper, a bold navy vanity, a marble sink and a modern-glam mirror.

Think Multifunctional
In most homes, having a designated guest bedroom is wasted space a family rarely uses. Hilary’s solution: this ultra-comfortable and classic sleeper sofa. Most days, the now elegant-meets-whimsical room plays host to imagination, crafts, artistry and story time. When needed, a little reconfiguring turns it into a sweet escape for visitors.

Embrace the All White
Hilary breathed fresh air into this home remodel with an all-white kitchen, which she paired with natural woods and brass hardware for a modern edge. Wall-to-wall cabinetry ensures the growing family has tons of storage, keeping the space clutter-free.

Think Inside the Box
We love when Hilary reimagines a typical design element. Built-ins surrounding a fireplace are traditionally used for storing and displaying beloved books and accessories. Here, Hilary added open shelving and drawers for storage to the existing built-ins, which she also used to create extra seating in the living room à la comfy benches.
