The Story
On her shows Love It or List It and Tough Love with Hilary Farr, the designer always tells the truth to her clients, no matter how much it hurts. After buying an adorable bungalow in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 2020, Hilary had to have a tough conversation with herself. She had planned to renovate the house but discovered that it was waterlogged and termite-ridden, and it had to go. “I was elated with the idea of transforming a little cottage — and devastated to learn it couldn’t be saved,” she says.
She had never built something from the ground up, but she ended up enjoying the process. “I had my own blank slate, so I indulged myself with all the ideas I’d been saving,” she says. Plus, rescue dog Suki and cat Puff love it here as much as Hilary does. Take a look around!
The Exterior
One of the most charming updates to the exterior: the walkway. Hilary surrounded this long and winding path to the front door with native grasses.

The TV Room
The only TV in the house is in this colorful space — Hilary’s favorite room. She had the Ambiente sofa and lumbar pillows covered with fabrics from her Covington line; the coffee table is also from Ambiente.
The Kitchen
The Silestone backsplash, hood vent and countertops were inspired by an all-marble kitchen at a Paris Airbnb where Hilary once stayed. “It’s never left my head,” she says. To keep the lines clean on the modern, flat-front cabinets, she chose thin pulls that almost disappear. "I designed the layout in a Southern way so there’s always a cross-draft. I don’t even need AC," she says.

The Living Room
A steel-clad fireplace was on Hilary’s wish list from day one. She worked with the craftsman who installed her metal roof to get the finish just right — it took him five tries! (One of her reno survival tips: Hire people you have vetted and can trust to carry out your vision.) The blue Rove Concepts sectional anchors the space. “I made a decision that I would use color in this house, even if it’s not exactly wild,” Hilary says. Her biggest splurge throughout the space is the lighting; this custom chandelier is by Visual Comfort.
The Bedroom
“Here I wanted romance, so I have curtains and French doors that I can open to hear the birds,” says Hilary. She hung drapes made with fabric from her collection with Covington and cut a screen she found at a local antiques store into a triptych as wall art. The bedding is from Peacock Alley.

The Bathroom
Hilary serendipitously found this wallpaper at High Point Furniture Market. The York Wallcoverings team was packing up their booth, and she spotted a picture of the dramatic design. “You feel like you’re walking into a geode,” Hilary says. The Zara Home mirror has an organic shape that plays up that earthiness.
The Patio and Pool
Huge glass pocket doors open from the living room to this serene space. The saltwater plunge pool, from Soake Pools, “is something out of a lavish hotel,” Hilary says. She takes a dip every evening, but she says the best time to be out in the yard is first thing in the morning. “The birdsong is incredible.”
