Kat and Mike meet with Taylor Spellman to talk about her new HGTV show, One Week to Sell. On the show, Taylor and her design team descend on a home that has been for sale for a long time. They determine why the home is not selling then make the necessary updates to make it more desirable to home buyers.
Kat and Mike ask Taylor how she got started in interior design. Taylor humorously talks about starting her own design business at the tender age of 23 and how she found a niche market designing for bachelor dudes that didn’t have any design sense (aka — a mattress on the floor and Solo cups for dishware). But it wasn’t until her parents were trying to sell their home that she found her true calling.

“Their house had been on the market for like two years then I came in and did a couple of switches and it sold in one week," she says. Now she does that for other homeowners looking to make a quick sale. Taylor talks about how she designs with sustainability and history in mind. She hates seeing a staged house with all brand-new furniture. She is a big proponent of design that blends old and new pieces to bring in warmth and personality. But she still advises against personal effects and clutter when trying to sell your home.
Defend the Trend: Gallery Walls
In our Defend the Trend segment of the podcast, Kat and Mike ask Taylor if she’s a fan of gallery walls or should they be moved to a museum. Taylor says they’re not a trend, they’re a classic. She goes on to explain that gallery walls are wonderful because they are affordable and can be comprised of so many things like photos, thrift-store artwork, and souvenirs. “Also, a big amazing piece of art is great, but a big amazing piece of art can be expensive,” adds Taylor.
