It's no secret that Dave and Jenny Marrs, hosts of HGTV's Fixer to Fabulous, love Italy. These two have spent ample time in various places around the country with their entire family (kids and all!). In fact, in their Fixer to Fabulous: Italiano spinoff — which aired on HGTV in 2024 — they renovated an entire historic villa in Italy. (Watch the reno on HBO Max or discovery+.) So if you're planning a trip, the Marrses are just the duo to get some advice from. Ahead, they share their hand-picked list of spots to visit in Italy.

The Arezzo Antique Market is one of Italy’s oldest and largest antique fairs, drawing visitors from around the world. “The piazza is full of vendors and all kinds of unique antiques,” says Jenny. Stalls overflow with centuries-old furniture, handcrafted ceramics, vintage textiles and unique decorative pieces that showcase Italy’s rich history. Experiencing the market offers a thrilling treasure hunt for one-of-a-kind finds, while also providing a vibrant atmosphere filled with bustling streets and artisans whose skills have been passed down through generations. Wandering the piazza, visitors can soak in the energy of local life and discover unexpected treasures at every turn.

The last town on the Sorrento Peninsula, Massa Lubrense offers a peaceful and scenic base for exploring the Amalfi Coast, with sweeping views of the sea and easy access to iconic towns like Positano, Amalfi and Capri. For a truly authentic stay, the Marrses recommend Splendore Su Capri — a private villa with sea views, terraced gardens and thoughtful details throughout that make it feel lived-in and welcoming. “Daniela, the owner, was the most generous and accommodating host,” the couple reveals. “She became a friend during our stay and arranged a private dinner cooked by her mom and tours in the area with her father‑in‑law. It was a very memorable and amazing place to visit!”

A destination for antiques, tiles and unique home furnishings, Riccardo Barthel in Florence is a treasure trove for designers and travelers alike looking to re-create Tuscan style in their homes. The shop offers carefully curated pieces that reflect Italy’s rich artistic and decorative traditions. Think vintage furniture, decorative accents and other unique finds. From ornate mirrors to one-of-a-kind lighting, each piece tells a story of Italian craftsmanship. “It’s the perfect place to find antique pieces, tile and anything you need for your home,” says Jenny, who found this “island” table at the shop.

Tucked away in a quieter corner of Venice, San Trovaso Ristorante offers a glimpse of the city beyond the typical tourist paths. Its welcoming atmosphere, simple yet flavorful dishes and cozy setting make it the kind of place where visitors can relax and enjoy an authentic Venetian meal. “San Trovaso is a restaurant in Venice we stumbled upon on a trip with our parents and then went with the kids to re-create the photo,” says Jenny.

“We love Venice — it’s one of the most unique cities in the world,” says Jenny. “Getting lost on the streets of Venice in the evening under the glow of the moon, with the quiet lapping of canals as a background melody, is pure magic. It gets a bad rap for being overly touristy, but the Dorsoduro neighborhood is quiet and unpretentious.” Located just south of the Grand Canal and about a 10-minute walk from St. Mark’s Square, the Dorsoduro area offers a quieter, more residential experience, with relaxed piazzas, local cafes and canals that feel tucked away from the busier areas. The colorful buildings, small artisan shops and hidden squares make this neighborhood perfect for evening strolls and photos.

Featuring some of the clearest waters in the Mediterranean, powdery white beaches and simple seaside meals full of freshly caught seafood, Sardinia is a paradise for travelers seeking both natural beauty and culinary delights. The island is dotted with tucked-away restaurants serving local seafood and artisanal cheeses, offering visitors a true taste of Sardinian life. Hiking trails, coastal drives and charming towns add to the sense of discovery and adventure. “We spent a week here and have been wanting to go back ever since,” says Jenny. “It’s truly a magical island.”

Set against dramatic mountains and crystal-clear water, Lake Garda offers a relaxed, family-friendly alternative to some of Italy’s more glamorous lakes. The towns that dot its shoreline feel approachable and unpretentious, blending outdoor adventure with old-world charm, all while revealing breathtaking scenery, walkable waterfronts and a relaxed pace that encourages visitors to linger over meals and explore at leisure. Quaint streets lined with cafes, gelaterias and local artisan shops invite visitors to pause and savor the lakeside ambiance. “We visited Gardone Riviera, Salò and Riva del Garda, and they’re absolutely breathtakingly beautiful,” says Jenny.

A must-visit for design enthusiasts in Florence, La Mecca is a two-building shop specializing in art, decor and furniture. One building features smaller pieces and artwork, while the other, just across the street, offers vintage furniture for Italian-inspired interiors. It's the perfect stop for anyone hoping to bring a touch of Florence home. The eclectic displays and carefully curated vignettes spark inspiration for both large and small design projects. “La Mecca is where I found a lot of the pieces for the house on Fixer to Fabulous: Italiano,” Jenny says. “Be sure to visit both buildings!”

Exploring Tuscany with a local guide offers a deeper connection to the region’s food, wine and culture. The Marrses swear by Rebecca and her husband, Pierre, the duo behind the tour company Grape Tours in Tuscany, whose excursions focus on authentic experiences — from intimate winery visits to leisurely meals that celebrate regional ingredients and traditions. Guests experience hands-on tastings and behind-the-scenes moments that aren’t available to typical tourists. “We met Rebecca and her husband, Pierre, many years ago on our first trip to Italy and have become dear friends,” says Jenny. “We never miss an opportunity to taste wine and eat delicious food with them guiding the way. Their team has even prepared the most fun, educational and family-friendly tours for our kids.”

Carved into underground tunnels below the town of Montepulciano, De’ Ricci Cantine Storiche is a historic winery that offers a glimpse into centuries-old winemaking traditions with its dramatic stone architecture and deep sense of history. Visitors descend into vaulted cellars to explore where wines are produced, guided by a family of winemakers known for their hospitality. The cool, dimly lit cantina creates a sense of mystery and reverence for the winemaking craft. “We always bring friends to tour De’ Ricci Cantine,” say Dave and Jenny. “The history of the winery and the immensely kind and welcoming family of winemakers, combined with the unique architecture ... is breathtaking. It’s a must-see and an often-missed spot in Tuscany.”

Held in the streets of Montepulciano, Bravìo delle Botti is an annual barrel-rolling race where teams representing the town’s historic neighborhoods or contrade (districts) compete to roll heavy wine barrels up steep streets. “One of our favorite annual traditions is attending the Bravìo and cheering on our family friend’s contrade in the race,” says the couple. “The history, tradition, energy, pride of place and the absolute joy experienced during this festival and culturally significant competition is like nothing we had ever experienced before.” The colorful banners, cheering crowds and festive music make it a must-see for visitors wanting a lively taste of Tuscan culture, while also offering a deep dive into the customs, culture and camaraderie that define this Tuscan town.
