There are more insulated bottles out there these days than ever before, but they’re not all created equal. Lots of travel mugs leak, cool down too quickly or just aren’t durable.

If you need to keep your coffee hot while you’re out on a long road trip, or if you’re shopping for someone who can’t get enough coffee (nor drink it fast enough), the Stanley Master Series is exactly what you’re looking for.

I’ve yet to find an insulated bottle that keeps drinks hotter for longer than the Stanley Master Series. The biggest bottle in the series is a 1.4-quart stainless-steel behemoth weighing nearly three pounds. It might sound excessive, but it’s truly the most impressive insulated bottle I’ve ever seen. To show off how well it works, the Stanley team once filled up a set of these with fresh, hot coffee in Seattle and drove it to a trade show in Salt Lake City. Not only was it still hot when it arrived more than 24 hours later, but it was also still steaming when I opened one of the bottles I got at the trade show again the following day. Officially, Stanley says it can keep liquids hot for 27 hours and iced for up to 100.

A super-burly insulated bottle like this is an ideal gift for frequent road-trippers, families who spend a lot of time in the snow and want hot chocolate waiting for them at the car at the end of a ski day or anyone who works outside in cold (or ultra-hot) weather.

The Stanley Master Series has a few sizes, the smallest of which fits in a car cup holder. It’s still on the heavy side for an insulated bottle, at just over one pound, but it’s worth its weight if you’re serious about keeping its contents’ temperature consistent. I once filled this bottle with ice cream and brought it on an overnight backpacking trip. A full day after sealing up the bottle, the ice cream was still frozen. (For best results, freeze the bottle open, empty and dry for at least a few hours before filling it. This will help keep the contents frozen longer.)

While the Stanley Master Series is one of my favorite bottles for outdoor adventurers, these picks from high-end drinkware companies are also worth considering.
