If you ever wanted to try your hand at mask-making, here's the perfect opportunity. We made our Green Man mask using a simple paper mâché mask, tin foil, tape and modeling paste. It’s fun to make, and he doesn’t have to be pretty, so no need to worry about being precise. Since the wreath form is covered in evergreens, after Halloween, you can remove the Green Man mask and replace it with a piece of holiday decor.

Tools and Materials

  • moss, lichen and sticks
  • floral wire and wire cutters
  • Mod Podge sealer and glue
  • bicycle wheel wreath form
  • evergreen wreath form
  • faux greenery in blue hues such as rosemary, sage and eucalyptus
  • spanish moss garland

1. Create the Face

Begin with a basic paper mâché mask. Crumple aluminum foil to shape the brow lines, a prominent nose, lips, jowls and wrinkles. Secure the foil to the mask using masking tape.

2. Add Character With Modeling Paste

To make his face more expressive, apply layers of modeling paste using a palette knife. Carve finer lines and wrinkles into the face with the paste. Allow the paste to dry slightly before carving thicker sections. Leave the mask to dry overnight. Cover the eye holes with masking tape.

3. Paint the Face

Apply a coat of black paint to the entire mask, creating the foundation for the shadows. Use a piece of bark as a color reference. Lightly brush gray and brown over the surface, avoiding the cracks.

4. Add Finishing Touches

Add highlights to the face using light green and white paint. Paint the white portions of the faux eyeballs black. Cut small circles in the eye area of the masking tape and attach the eyes from behind using masking tape.

5. Seal and Add Moss

Apply Mod Podge to seal the entire mask, both front and back. Use Mod Podge again to attach small natural elements like lichen and moss. To be able to hang the mask on the wreath, poke tiny holes on either side of the mask and insert about 10 inches of floral wire, twisting it to secure it.

6. Assemble the Wreath

Press a bicycle wheel wreath form into the center of the evergreen wreath form and attach them using floral wire. Bend the evergreen pieces around the bicycle wheel as necessary. Use floral wire to attach the extra faux greenery to the wreath from the outside in. Finish with sticks and bark covered in lichen. Finally, wire the mask to the wreath form to complete your Green Man mask.
