This charming wreath is designed for garden lovers. The base of the wreath is created with mini flowerpots filled with floral foam. The floral foam allows you to switch out the blooms every season. When filled with brightly colored hydrangea blooms, it serves as a reminder of the sunnier days of summer. When those blooms begin to fade, it's easy to transition the wreath into the colors of autumn, then add evergreens and berries to make it a winter accessory for your front door. Starting with a simple store-bought grapevine base makes this project easy enough for anyone to tackle.

Tools and Materials

  • white craft paint
  • floral wire
  • hot glue gun
  • baking soda
  • moss

1. Paint the Pots

For this wreath, you will need about 15 2" flowerpots and six 1" pots. Begin by “aging” the terracotta pots. In a bowl, mix water, baking soda, and just a tiny bit of white paint to create a very runny solution — mostly water. Using your fingertips (latex gloves come in handy here), buff the mixture onto the surface of the pots. Work in sections, wiping each area with a paper towel as you go. The goal is to achieve only a subtle haze on the terracotta. Repeat this process for each pot.

2. Prep Pots

Cut two pieces of floral wire, each about 8" to 12" long. Thread the wires through the bottom hole of each pot. Then, cut a cube of dry floral foam to fit snugly into each pot and press it down. If the foam fits securely, there's no need for glue. Repeat this process for all the pots.

3. Attach Pots to Wreath Form

Lay a pot on the grapevine wreath and use the two wires to secure it tightly. Lift the wreath to a vertical position to test whether the pot stays in place. If they don't stay put, refasten the wires until the pot is held securely. Continue around the wreath, attaching all the 2" pots in various directions. Once the larger pots are fastened, fill any gaps with the 1" pots. Tuck moss between the pots.

4. Fill With Flowers

For summertime vibes, cut small pieces of dried hydrangea, making sure to choose flowers with sturdy stems. Gently insert the stems into the floral foam in each pot. You can stick with one color of hydrangea or mix different colors for a more vibrant look. Attach a piece of wire to the back and your beautiful new wreath is ready to hang.

5. Change It Up for Fall

As the colors of the hydrangeas begin to fade, add some dried florals in oranges and some dark berries to transition your wreath into fall. Finish it with an autumn ribbon.

6. Change It Again for Winter

For the holiday/Christmas season, remove the hydrangeas and fill the pots with a mixture of fresh greenery and faux berries. A red ribbon makes it extra festive.
