1. Select and Prep the Pumpkin

The first step to creating a pumpkin planter that lasts is to choose the right pumpkin. Most importantly, pick a pumpkin that is large enough to hold the pot of your choice. The outside of the pumpkin should be clear of cuts or spots, and the stem should be on the dry side (but not totally brown or withered). Look for any evidence of rot, as even a tiny amount will shorten the life of your pumpkin. Make a water and bleach solution by adding a teaspoon of bleach to a spray bottle filled with filtered water. Spray the outside of the pumpkin and wipe away any dirt or debris.

2. Mark and Cut the Opening

The flowers will sit in a plastic pot inside the pumpkin. Either purchase a potted plant that will fit into the pumpkin or replant smaller trays into the perfectly-sized pot. Trace the pot’s diameter onto the top of the pumpkin. Use a knife to cut along the circle, then remove the cut section. Test whether your pot sits flush with the top of the pumpkin. If it sticks up too much, cut away a little more to enlarge the opening. Remove the stringy flesh and seeds from the inside of the pumpkin with a large spoon. Scrape the interior as cleanly as possible. (This contributes to the longevity to the pumpkin.)

3. Seal the Pumpkin

Seal the inside of the pumpkin to help kill rot-causing bacteria and keep your pumpkin hydrated for lasting freshness. Spray the whole pumpkin, inside and out, with the water and bleach mixture. Let it sit for a few minutes. Using a clean rag or paper towels, remove as much of the moisture as possible from inside the pumpkin. Wipe out any remaining seeds or loose flesh. Once the pumpkin is dry, spray or wipe the cut areas with cooking oil to create a moisture barrier.

4. Assemble Your Pumpkin Planter

If you are creating your own planter combo, replant smaller seasonal blooms into the plastic pot that fits your pumpkin, adding more potting soil as needed. Water your arrangement, letting any excess water drain out. Replace the pot inside the pumpkin.

Care and Maintenance

  • The cooler and dryer you keep your planter, the longer it will last. Keep the pumpkin out of direct sunlight. (Placing it on a fully shaded porch is best.) Consider bringing it inside on hot and sunny days, as even a small amount of direct sun will speed up rotting.
  • To water the blooms, remove the plastic pot from the pumpkin. Water as usual, letting the pot drain fully before placing it back inside the pumpkin.
