Next to folding sheets, putting on a duvet cover is one of the most challenging chores to do alone. This genius tip will make it much easier to change bedding on a regular basis.

What Is a Duvet Cover?

A duvet cover works similar to a pillowcase, protecting the soft duvet inserted inside from sweat, spills, etc. It's much easier to wash a duvet cover than the full duvet — which is usually filled with goose or duck down or some sort of synthetic fiber fluff.

Duvet covers are often machine washable while duvets — often referred to as "comforters" but with corner loops — are often dry-clean only. A few other reasons duvet covers are so useful: It's easy to change the complete look of your bedroom by simply swapping duvet covers and you can adjust the softness — or feel — of your bedding by adding the duvet cover over the fluffy comforter inside.

Duvet covers usually close around the duvet either with corner ties, buttons, zippers or ties at the bottom end.

Steps to Putting on a Duvet Cover

1. Turn Cover Inside Out

Start by turning your clean duvet cover inside out.

2. Spread Cover on Bed

Spread the duvet cover on your bed with the opening of the duvet cover at the foot of your bed.

3. Lay Down Duvet

Lay the duvet on top of your duvet cover. Make sure all the corners and edges are matched up.

4. Roll It All Up Like a Burrito

Starting from the top, roll your duvet cover and duvet up like a big burrito.

5. Pull Opening Over Duvet

Pull the opening of the duvet cover up and over the duvet, stuffing the duvet inside the cover along the entire length of the opening, then zip the duvet cover closed.

6. Unroll and Shake

Start unrolling at the foot of the bed, pulling the cover (the burrito stuffing) away from the duvet roll as you go. Shake your comforter out a few times and you're done.
