How to Make an Easy Halloween Front Porch Planter
Learn how to turn a plain garden urn, scary skeleton parts and dark plants into chic fall porch decor.

Tools and Materials
- large plastic urn
- potting soil
- skeleton head
- skeleton hands (right + left)
- floral picks
- dried seed pods
- variety of dark leaf plants: We used purple leaf elephant ear, dark mystery pilea, pan am pilea, cherry mint rex begonia
1. Fill the Urn With Plants
Start with a large dark urn with a drainage hole. Add potting soil, filling it about halfway. Plant the large elephant ear in the back of the urn, ensuring it is centered. Add the spiky leaf mystery pilea directly in front of the elephant ear. Flank the elephant ear with rex begonias on either side, spacing them evenly. Fill in the front space with the smaller pan am pileas. Water the plants thoroughly and allow them to drain. You can use any dark-leaf plants. Mix different textures and colors for interest.
2. Make It Spooky
Lay the skeleton head in the front of the urn, between the plants. Press the right and left skeleton hands into the dirt on either side of the head, as if it were trying to climb out. Insert wires into the dried seed pods to attach the floral picks and hang the pods over the side of the urn, creating a spooky effect.
Water the plants regularly and keep them in a warm spot with bright light to ensure they stay healthy throughout the Halloween season.
