Once a fixture across the Midwest, these geese faded from front-porch popularity in the early 2000s. Now, they’re reappearing on porches and lawns across the country. Our best guess? “Porch geese became popular in the ’80s and ’90s, but they’re definitely having a comeback, and I’m loving it,” says home design, DIY and porch goose influencer Mae Lutz, who received a goose for her 37th birthday. “Around Christmas, my social media feeds were filled with people showing off their porch goose wrapped under the tree — I’m talking perfectly wrapped, where you could tell it was a goose just from the silhouette. I thought it was hysterical. Then I joined The Porch Goose Club of America on Facebook, and seeing everyone else’s obsession, creative outfits and commitment to finding the perfect name completely won me over. By the time my birthday rolled around, I knew I needed one of my own.”

The allure of a porch goose

After porch geese fell out of fashion, many assumed they’d remain relics of the past. Now, millennials and Gen Z are bringing the nostalgic Midwestern lawn ornament back to the forefront of porch decor, with posts popping up from people across the country — and around the world.

“I think people are realizing their homes don’t have to look exactly like everyone else’s, and a porch goose is a pretty fun way to show some personality,” says Lutz of the TikTok-fueled porch goose craze. [Plus] for a lot of people, they bring back memories of their grandparents’ house or someone in the neighborhood who always had theirs dressed for the occasion.”

The way Lutz sees it, the allure of a porch goose comes down to how much joy it sparks for people who catch a glimpse while passing — or scrolling — by. “Every time I post mine, the comments are full of people sharing stories about their grandma’s goose or telling me they immediately bought one for themselves,” Lutz says. “Delivery drivers leave packages with Lucy like she’s in charge; she’s the mascot on the invitation for our Fourth of July party; and my daughter tells her how beautiful she looks every time she gets a new outfit. It’s one of those rare decor pieces that doesn’t take itself seriously, and I think that’s part of the magic.”

“I think the key is to lean into the whimsy,” Lutz says. “We love having Lucy, our goose, right at our entry. Any porch goose looks right at home next to vintage planters, fresh flowers and a beautiful wreath. The whole charm is that it’s a little unexpected and a little silly. The contrast between a classic front porch and a goose in a tiny raincoat is what makes it so fun.”
