Take a Tour of Mina Starsiak’s Lake House Renovation as Seen on 'Good Bones'

Mina Starsiak Hawk is ready for a fresh start — and for the Good Bones star, a fresh start often comes in the form of a home renovation. After shutting down Two Chicks and a Hammer headquarters and slimming down her business overall, Mina decided to lean into — not away from — all the change. For the last three years, she and her husband, Steve Hawk, have been looking for an affordable fixer upper on the water to use as a retreat from the bustle of Indianapolis. They finally found the perfect fit — and what better time to renovate it than right now? "While it’s definitely going to be a change, it’s a change I’m ready for," said Mina. Ahead, step inside the home's remodel, as seen on Good Bones: New Beginnings.

The 5,000-square-foot midcentury modern home, located 30 minutes away from downtown Indianapolis in Martinsville, has five bedrooms and three bathrooms. To stay within budget, Mina decided to start by renovating just the main floor — which is where the family planned to spend most of their time. Though the updates needed were mostly cosmetic, Mina knew refinishing everything wouldn't be easy.

Enter the exterior's monochromatic makeover: Mina kept the essence of the home's original midcentury modern style but modernized it to reflect her own personality. Oversized lantern fixtures flank newly painted, dark bronze front doors. In a cost-effective (yet statement-making) move, Mina kept the clean river rock flower but added oversized spherical planters.

When Mina and Steve designed their Indianapolis home, Steve’s mom searched for lions (which represent strength and protection) to display in front of their house. Since then, Steve has lost both of his parents, so he and Mina found a pair of big cats to greet guests at the lake home's entrance in her honor.

Natural, airy and comfortable, the living room showcases Mina’s style. Ready-to-sink-into sofas, cushy chairs and layers of ottomans come together atop a striped gray-and-cream rug. Light blonde flooring throughout the main floor gives the space a modern look. Though Mina didn't have to make major floor plan changes or move walls, she did open up the living area by taking down pony walls.

Mina set out to marry the midcentury style of the home with her style: a more muted, cozy aesthetic that feels fresh. To create interest in her monochromatic palette, she incorporated a mix of different textures and patterns.

For her son’s room (which will also serve as a guest room), Mina leaned into her favorite tone-on-tone look. Sage green, leather and plaid combine in the “big boy” space that will grow with him — and appeal to adult visitors — while an abundance of dinosaur decor keeps the space “little” for now.

The kid/adult-friendly theme continues into the guest bathroom, where a midcentury modern light wood vanity is topped with sleek white countertops. Brushed bronze hardware and light fixtures add shine, while a pair of scalloped mirrors steal the show. Frilly and glossy, the mirrors make such a statement, Mina decided to change the light fixtures to accommodate them.
