Derek and Julianne Dance Their Way Through Demolition
Motivated to give back to their long-time gym trainer and friend, Mark, dance superstar-siblings Derek and Julianne Hough pop and pivot to complete a surprise renovation on Celebrity IOU. After a decade of renting his condo in Southern California, Mark was finally able to purchase it for himself — only to have the pandemic shutter the doors of his gym. Now, Mark trains clients out of his home. Derek and Julianne knew Mark needed a space that fits his aesthetic and his lifestyle, so they turned to Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott.

Surprising Mark With a New Kitchen and Dining Room
“Mark’s like family. He’s going to be a groomsman at my wedding,” says Derek of their friendship. “His support allowed me to grow in times of uncertainty, and he’s going through that in his life right now,” agreed Julianne. The duo created a living space tailored to all of Mark's needs. Now he can entertain, host and cook.

A peninsula and overhead vent hood made entertaining difficult. The kitchen needed more flow and less floral-coastal accents, the Hough siblings decided.
After: The Kitchen
A sleek black ceramic tile backsplash and moody, smoked oak cabinets make a statement in Mark’s new kitchen. Despite losing the peninsula storage, cabinetry is still plentiful. New appliances modernize the space and improve functionality. Light wood cladding on the ceiling enhances texture and ambiance. Recessed lights and wall sconces supplement the natural daylight.

Partnered with a modern range hood, the high-efficiency induction cooktop now sits in a more convenient location. The team thoughtfully installed a contemporary Roman clay finish around the range hood to angle with the lofted ceiling, making the room feel taller. The oak cabinets (void of hardware) deliver a sleek aesthetic.

Light-toned hardwood floors extend from the kitchen and throughout the first floor. A cabinet in an under-utilized corner provides more storage for dishes and appliances.
Before: The Kitchen
Mark attempted to create space for guests to join him in the kitchen by adding two stools at the peninsula, but what he really desired was an open space.

Now, more than one person can prepare food. A large window lets in daylight, which balances out all the dark glazed tiles and mid-tone hardwoods, creating moody appeal.

Counter space is plentiful in Mark’s new kitchen. Under-cabinet lighting illuminates the hand-glazed ceramic tiles. A custom-paneled dishwasher and refrigerator pair perfectly with the oak cabinets.

A mirrored wall — reflecting the condo's spiral staircase — delivered '80s vibes. French doors divided the kitchen from the dining area, making it nearly impossible to entertain while preparing food.
You Never Know What You'll Find
Among the many surprises Drew and Jonathan discovered during the project was an existing window in the dining room. Previously covered by the full floor-to-ceiling mirror, the design team was able to preserve the window and bring natural daylight into the dark dining room.

New dark gray walls emit navy blue undertones in the natural light. Dark blue window treatments create rich texture, while vegan leather upholstery covers banquette seating for Mark and his guests. Framed abstract prints create movement.

Repositioning the table against a wall opened up space for a major dining room addition. With upper cabinets, floating shelves and ample counter space, the fresh and functional bar area is equal parts cocktail and juicing stations.
