From the Catwalk to the Rooftop
During this episode of Celebrity IOU, world-famous supermodel Heidi Klum learned a new trade while renovating a home for her trusted housekeeper of 17 years, Lucia. Lucia and her husband share their home with their four grandchildren, their daughter and their son-in-law. While home improvements were always on this multi-generational family’s mind, unexpected illness and loss stalled their plans. With the help of Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott, Heidi got hands-on throughout the entirety of this reno, installing everything from floors to new shingles.

Surprising Lucia with a Remodeled Home
“Lucia is the American dream story. She came here from Mexico, worked and worked and worked and was able to buy her own house,” said Heidi. “She’s always had my back, and it feels good that now I can have hers, too.” With the help of the design team, Heidi set out to make Lucia's home chic, functional and ready for family gatherings.
Before: The Dining Room
Lucia and her family loved to entertain but their home's floor plan wasn't properly laid out for gathering or socializing.
After: The Dining Room
Removing walls was the first step in opening up the kitchen. A new, reoriented layout offers maximum functionality and improves the flow of the room. Light-toned hardwood floors warm up the now-modern space. Counter-height seats at the showpiece peninsula offer more space for dining and entertaining, while coordinating pendants and recessed lights make it bright.

A statement-worthy pendant replaces the previous ceiling fan over the dining table. A chic dark wood table and comfortable chairs with high-performance fabric provide welcoming seating in the dining room. Beige curtains frame two windows in the space. Light European oak hardwood floors and light-colored paint help the space feel warm. Two family photos are framed and hung on the wall. A small tree breathes vibrancy and color into the room.

Before: The Kitchen
The small kitchen in Lucia’s home was suitable for one, maybe two cooks. And its layout needed help: The family’s refrigerator was located on an enclosed porch. Dark wood cabinets and dark floors and countertops dated the design.
After: The Kitchen
Drew and Jonathan reoriented the kitchen to make it easier to prepare meals while entertaining. White cabinet doors extend all the way to the ceiling, providing ample storage. The design team incorporated sophisticated brass finishes like cabinet and sink hardware, as well as pendant lighting. Marbled quartz countertops promise durability and add functionality to the room.

After: The Kitchen
The design team insisted on improving the family’s kitchen storage. They started by creating more space for the refrigerator which was previously stored on an adjacent porch. Heidi selected two-toned cabinets and worked with Drew and Jonathan to design a functional pantry as an extension of the prep area in the kitchen. Shelves within the new cabinets offer space for food storage while open shelving and high storage provide room for decorative items and glassware.

Base cabinets in light beige contrast the white uppers. Light hardwood floors extend throughout. A gorgeous gas range carries brass details to match the rest of the hardware, while a hidden hood vent adds functionality.

Before: The Living Room and Entryway
The front door of Lucia’s home opens directly into the living room, which lacked enough seating to suit the family of seven, let alone their visitors and extended family members. Heidi was determined to give them an entertaining space they could use and enjoy.
After: The Living Room and Entryway
A large sofa with a chaise extension and a white modern captain's chair provide comfortable seating. A large black-and-white area rug extends beneath the sofa and furnishings to fill the space. The team removed the sheet curtains from the corner windows and replaced them with modern beige ones to let in more light. A gold-framed painting hangs above the couch, as does a chunky knit blanket. The bros went with black for the interior front door, which opens to face a dedicated storage cabinet that can serve as the family’s “drop zone.”

Before: The Laundry Room
Lucia’s former laundry room was only accessible from the outdoors.
After: The Addition
New square footage plays home to the family's washer and dryer. The exterior received a new coat of stucco and yellow paint, concrete steps and a frosted glass door. New landscaping adds appeal.

After: The Laundry Room
Inside the frosted glass door and adjacent to the kitchen, the new laundry room shines, boasting coordinating upper and lower cabinetry that matches the kitchen storage. New white appliances provide functionality. Best of all, the family can do their laundry without stepping foot outdoors.
