Drew and Jonathan Scott Create Master Bedroom Oases

The third challenge in this season of Brother vs. Brother put Drew and Jonathan’s creativity to the test with cramped spaces and … a hot tub. Would you like to come home from the beach to this cozy coastal bedroom? 

Check out those ceilings! Drew’s master suite has a lot of potential, but isn’t quite suite enough yet. He plans to highlight the high ceilings and beams with fresh paint and stain and use his $30,000 budget to create a master bedroom with a sitting area. He’ll also gut the existing bathroom and reconfigure the layout to create a spa-like space and a massive walk-in closet.

But first … this hot tub has to go.

A bit easier said than done, it seems!

Not to say that there’s not enough time for a few pull-ups here and there.

High ceilings and spacious layouts are often the dream for most master bedrooms, but the existing one in Drew’s house was more drab than dreamy. 

All we have to say: Ahhhhh. 

Fresh paint on the ceilings, new stain on the existing beam and a textured grasscloth wallpaper draw the eye to the ceiling and make the room feel even bigger than it already is.

Modern light fixtures and a mix of wicker and beachy wood accents help create a coastal feel for Drew’s bedroom without feeling novelty.

But wait, there’s more! The bedroom extends further beyond the sliding glass doors, allowing for an opportunity to create a seriously luxurious sitting area. 

Yep, that’s luxury! Drew’s custom floating fireplace and surrounding cabinets create the ultimate feeling of relaxation for buyers in need of a night in after the beach. 

Time to cozy up by the fire!

Finishing touches in the cabinets bring pops of color to the feature wall.

Sure, it’s meant to be a vacation house. But that doesn’t justify a closet this dark and depressing.

Custom shelving and a fresh coat of paint bring the master suite’s walk-in closet to official luxe vacation status.

The black tiled shower in Drew’s master suite slides right past retro-cool into depressingly ‘80s territory. 

Now that’s a vacation shower! The new walk-in, oversized shower is covered in a hexagon patterned marble with more than enough room for a party. 

Drew can’t seem to escape the abundant wood paneling in his house. 

A brand new double vanity with two LED mirrors totally transform the master bathroom. 

Dimensional sea blue tiles create a backsplash you can’t help but want to touch. 

Marble, marble, marble as far as the eye can see! 

The challenges in Jonathan’s single-story beach house are markedly different from Drew’s. For the bed and bath challenge, he’ll need to stretch his $20,000 budget to reconfigure a tiny guest room and Jack and Jill bathroom into an impressive master suite. A mix of sweet, inviting, sophisticated and glam is the end goal for Jonathan this challenge.

Are you ready to enjoy a relaxing vacation in this leftover Murphy bed? Didn’t think so. 

With the wall separating the bedroom from the extra room facing the back patio removed, Jonathan was able to seriously expand the square footage into an acceptable master bedroom. 

No wonder the previous owners used a Murphy bed — this bedroom was tiny! 

Deep blue paint on the walls and the ceiling make the new crown molding stand out, as well as draw the eye up to make the room feel almost infinite and bigger than it already is. 

The previous bedroom felt cramped with just a few pieces of furniture.

Modern light fixtures and wood accents create an air of both romance and comfort in the master bedroom.

Though it had access to a Jack and Jill bathroom, the bedroom had limited storage space.

Everything in the new master got a much-needed refresh, including the gorgeous, light wood doors for the closet and bathroom. 

The rich wood footboard and neutral fabric headboard for the bed perfectly balance out the blues and earth tones throughout the new master. 

Jonathan used both textiles and furniture to mix patterns throughout the bedroom.

What better finishing touch than a vase of fresh flowers? 

It wouldn’t be a bathroom reno without some seriously dated wallpaper. Jonathan’s bathroom has a lot of it.

Goodbye, wallpaper. Hello, sleek and glossy, tile!

A chic new mirror and gold finishes take the vanity from dated to dramatic.

The new textured tile throughout the revamped bathroom creates some … waves. 

The former bathroom was configured in a Jack and Jill layout, which didn’t work for Jonathan’s grand master suite ideas. 

The new master bathroom is complete with marble floor tiles in a hexagon pattern. 

Desert Flippers hosts Eric and Lindsey Bennett are experts at transforming neglected houses into inviting spaces and use that expertise to declare a winner of the master suites challenge.

Eric said the grasscloth wallpaper made the ceiling feel like it goes on forever, and Lindsey called the living area light, bright and open. 

The deep blue paint color makes the room feel “kind of sexy,” Lindsey said, and Eric loved the “motion in the ocean” feel of the tile in the master bathroom. 

Many features in both rooms stood out to Eric and Lindsey, but whose will they declare as the winner? Drew or Jonathan?

The competition is now 2 to 1 for Drew! Eric and Lindsey ultimately said that Drew’s suite was a “complete retreat” and that they loved the cozy, seaside feel of it. 

For this challenge, the winner gets to meet and play with penguins at Galveston’s Moody Gardens aquarium, while the loser cleans up after them. 

It’s a nice look for Jonathan, don’t you think? 

Drew seems pretty popular with the penguins! Could it be the feeding bucket in his hand?

Drew’s prize for winning the bedroom challenge is the full penguin experience at Galveston’s Moody Gardens aquarium, where he gets to make keepsake art with his new friends.

Jonathan may have lost the bedroom challenge and been sentenced to penguin cleanup duty, but brother Drew still let him tag along for the fun parts of the penguin experience.
