Curb Appeal

The front porch addition, an attractive but simple landscaping layout and the home's rich dark-gray board-and-batten exterior helped transform this charming traditional home into a bold maritime retreat.

Easy Entry

A curved walkway with simple paver system connects the home's asphalt driveway to the front porch. A side entry to the home off the driveway, part of a new addition, offers easy access to a mudroom, laundry room and powder room inside.

Sneak Peek

The side entry shows the impressive sneak peek that greets visitors to this laid-back and homey Portland, Maine property. "It's a showstopper from the street and from the driveway because you can't help but notice all the color inside," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Step This Way

The front porch addition with standard pine framing includes Western Red Cedar posts. “Stainless steel cable rail was used for the railing infill to give the porch a clean, modern look,” says build manager Dylan Eastman.

More Seating

This second set of vintage theater seats add more seating to the front porch, with another cozy textured throw blanket and striped throw pillow that pick up the tones and shades of coral and red on the porch and in the entry inside.

Bold Entry

With the front door open, visitors get a look at the home's bold entry with coral and white stripes on the walls. A switch from traditional nautical blue and white stripes, the colorful wallpaper transforms a space that designer Brian Patrick Flynn says previously was "dark and dingy and it felt like a basement."

Coastal-Inspired Details

Build manager Dylan Eastman found the modern architectural front door with glass that connects the entry to the porch outside. The door was sprayed coral, a color inspired by the life preservers seen on the docks in the waterfront of Portland, Maine.

Play With Color

To play with color and bring the vibrancy of the front entry upstairs, designer Brian Patrick Flynn used the same coral and white striped wallpaper up the stairwell to the second floor, where the bedrooms and studio are located.

Vintage Vibe

A vintage wood table and cane chair add character and touch of warmth to the boldly striped front entry. A loose weave basket under the table offers easy storage for grab-and-go items as guests enter and leave the home.

Easy Connection

This casually stylish living room enjoys an easy connection with the stairs to the second floor of the home, and the bold front entry with horizontal coral and white striped wallpaper on the walls.

Cozy Space

An L-shaped modular sofa with a relaxed silhouette provides super-comfortable seating in this cozy living room with bay window, located just off the home's front entry. This casual and stylish space with color and texture was designed for easy entertaining, relaxing and watching TV.

Unique Decor

Custom commissioned art and special finds from brick-and-mortar small businesses add texture to this well-detailed space with windows that offer views of the front porch and side yard.

Easy Gathering Space

A trio of chairs in natural wood and black combines with the large, upholstered window seat to provide ample space for a small group.

High-Gloss Contrast

The wood floors of the breakfast nook and kitchen are painted in a high-gloss white that reflects natural light from the windows and adds a polished feel to the open concept space.

Historically Organized

Antique furniture pieces like this vintage card catalogue and filing system are repurposed throughout the home to bring a sense of place while adding vintage texture.

Angler Antiques

Vintage fishing baskets add coastal Maine style to the walls of the breakfast space while the antique chairs and card catalogue add storage and seating for any occasion.

Seaside Art

Right off the side entry, designer Brian Patrick Flynn commissioned this painting of a young female sailor by artist Karen Musgraves, that offers a modern take on sailors and captains. A collection of colorful books on a vintage trunk below adds options for reading time.

Bright and Airy

The combination of the side entry's windows and skylights that allow fresh air inside make the space bright and airy. "We're leaving the windows uncovered in here because we need the light," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Handy Hanging Storage

This wider view of the laundry room shows the solar powered “fresh air” skylights that keep the space light and bright, and hooks on the wall across from the bench that provide hanging storage.

Nautical Powder Room

The laundry room, mudroom and side entry enjoy easy access to the home's spacious powder room, a classic space with nautical-inspired wallpaper and lots of natural light.

Extra Detail

The powder room’s energy-efficient skylight includes charcoal-colored blinds that provide light control and darkening for the room when desired.

Rustic and Charming

The HGTV Urban Oasis 2020 kitchen is a central gathering space that combines timeless, rustic charm with modern day amenities. Painted white wood panel walls bring a fresh farmhouse feel while smart appliances and fixtures add high tech function to calm and airy kitchen.

Sleek and Simple Shelving

Painting open shelving the same color as the walls draws the eye in and keeps the room feeling spacious and airy. Kitchen necessities hang above the counter while artwork is displayed above to add a personal touch.

Serene Storage

A wall of soft-green cabinets at one end of the kitchen conceals the refrigerator and gives the room abundant storage while still feeling polished and neat.

Bucolic Beauty

The large sliding-glass door enhances the kitchen’s bright and open feel and captures the four-season beauty of outdoor life in Maine.

Easy and Relaxing

The HGTV Urban Oasis 2020 kitchen effortlessly captures the best of kitchen design with an open-concept floor plan to maximize coastal Maine living with easy indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces.

Guest Bedroom

An ultra-white bed and blush pink relaxed Roman shades on the windows help balance the forest green walls and ceiling in this cozy guest bedroom.

Lots of Storage

Double white paneled doors open to the guest bedroom's generously sized closet. The inside of the closet was painted the same lush shade of forest green as the bedroom walls, to create a coordinated look.

Guest Bathroom

The color contrast between the soft pink walls and the white vanity adds definition and personality to this fashionable bathroom.

Hue Knew

A custom pink shower curtain plays off the room’s pink tones and draws the eye up, making the room feel taller.

Down the Hall

The guest bathroom is conveniently located beside the studio and guest bedroom on the second floor.

Colorful and Creative

This color-blocked studio with bay window offers an inspiring place to be creative, from journal writing and adult coloring books that help relieve stress, to taking online art courses for tips on how to paint the beautiful lush landscapes or rocky coastline of Maine.

Rainbow-Inspired Shelves

The studio's ROYGBIV shelves represent the sequence of hues seen in a rainbow. The shelves offer display storage for art supplies, striped storage boxes, woven baskets, decorative accessories and potted plants. "I ditched the red for hot pink, so I've been calling it 'POYGBIV'," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Vintage Stools

Vintage red, blue and green stools offer casual seating that can be easily moved around the studio, and also used as a spot for displaying favorite books or a bowl of fruit for snack time.

Easy Transition

A white painted cased opening provides an easy transition between the upstairs coral and white horizontal striped hallway and this enticing main bedroom with blue walls.

Tall and Spacious

Numerous windows and top-grade skylights over a queen bed bring beautiful natural light into this tall and spacious main bedroom. Located on the second floor of HGTV Urban Oasis 2020, this bold space has a mostly blue color scheme, with touches of red and furniture sourced from local antique stores.

Unexpected Art

Twelve colorful vintage nautical flags in different shapes and sizes were used to decorate this large wall in the main bedroom, a creative and fun substitution for traditional art.

Vintage Modern Style

A vintage Danish modern credenza creates a stylish storage solution on this side of the main bedroom, with a warm wood tone that coordinates with the other vintage pieces in the space.

Coordinating Spaces

The adjoining main bathroom coordinates with the color scheme and style of the main bedroom, with a beautiful custom-made ombre vanity with drawers painted in different shades of blue.

Soak in the Beauty

A sliding-glass door with frameless design separates the vanity area from the main bathroom's wet room with clawfoot tub and inviting shower. A massive window and well-positioned skylights bring natural light and soothing breezes inside, so you can fully enjoy the lush setting of this bold Portland, Maine maritime retreat.

Flexible Space

The sliding-glass door with frameless design offers an easy way to keep the vanity area free from water from the wet room with shower and tub. "You close the whole thing off, and then that whole one space back there is for either purpose," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Closet Preview

The vintage offertory table with assorted books and decorative accessories sits by the doorway to the main bedroom's walk-in closet, that keeps clothes and accessories easily accessible and organized.

Fun and Colorful

A fun and colorful modern white and red globe chandelier illuminates the closet, and coordinates with the touches of red seen in the main bedroom.

Backyard

Cool evenings are warm and inviting with an outdoor fire pit and ample outdoor lighting.

Gather Round

Four teak chairs with white upholstered cushions add ample seating to the fire pit space with a touch of midcentury-modern style.

Natural Layers

Layering natural textures throughout the backyard space draws the eye through several outdoor living areas. From a paved, brick fire pit lounge to a natural wood deck, the organic elements contrast with the home’s elegant dark grey exterior.

Outdoor Contrast

The natural wood deck pops against the dark-gray exterior of the home while the mix of potted plants brings color and natural textures that soften the space.

Repurposed Elegance

A repurposed vintage table transforms into a chic gardening station on the back deck of HGTV Urban Oasis 2020. Painting the floating shelf the same dark grey as the home’s exterior adds space for a vintage sign and potted plants while staying connected to the home’s color story.

Pretty in Pink

Pops of pink on the outdoor rug and upholstered chairs add life and a fun feel to this outdoor dining space.

Effortless Alfresco

With a lush, green lawn and plenty of room to relax by the fire or enjoy dinner alfresco, outdoor living is effortless in the backyard of HGTV Urban Oasis 2020.
