Numerous windows and top-grade skylights over a queen bed bring beautiful natural light into this tall and spacious main bedroom. Located on the second floor of HGTV Urban Oasis 2020, this bold space has a mostly blue color scheme, with touches of red and furniture sourced from local antique stores.
The attractive blue used for the walls brings a punch of color to this private retreat. "This is a true blue," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. "It’s in the navy world, but it has a lot more purple in it, so it’s bright and not dark."
The mismatched storage solutions seen on each side of the bed were bought locally at brick-and-mortar antique stores. The non-matching furniture adds character and personality to this well-designed space.
A vintage wood dresser with drawers does double duty as a nightstand on this side of the textured bed. The brown tones of the wood dresser add warmth, and also offer contrast for the bedroom's blue walls.
A combination of small and large drawers in the dresser make it possible to efficiently store clothing items like socks and underwear, and extra pillowcases and folded sheets for the bed.
Blue striped roman shades made from a durable acrylic fabric dress up the main bedroom windows. The shades provide privacy when desired, and coordinate with the blue walls that create a colorful backdrop for this stylish space.
Striped custom pillows in different shades of blue add comfort and a touch of pattern on top of the bed. The cozy bedding includes a queen-sized navy quilt, made from a breathable linen that helps keep the bed comfortable on both warm and cool nights.
This laid-back and homey retreat is also user-friendly, with an active system which monitors indoor air quality and temperature to automatically control the skylights and shades to your desired comfort. The home’s advanced wireless security system can be controlled from your favorite device.
A woven basket with faux leather trim and handles sits underneath the side table/nightstand on this side of the bed. The handsome basket offers extra storage space, and an elegant and natural accent that contrasts with the bedroom’s blue walls.
Bedtime reading is easy, thanks to the bright white and navy-blue table lamps with linen shades that sit on top of each nightstand. The base of each lamp is made from hand-thrown terracotta clay with a dip dye glaze finish, with contrasting tones for a simple and fresh look.
Twelve colorful vintage nautical flags in different shapes and sizes were used to decorate this large wall in the main bedroom, a creative and fun substitution for traditional art.
The vintage flags pick up the blue, red and white colors used in this space, while also adding another coastal design detail that celebrates the local flavor of this bold Portland, Maine, maritime retreat.
The different shapes and sizes help the flags pop off the bedroom wall. "Some are conical and triangular, some are perfectly square," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. "But they all have a similar palette."
In addition to the two-tone navy-blue and white lamp, this nightstand also includes a selection of books for bedtime reading, a vase with flowers, and marble bowls for storing reading glasses and other bedroom essentials.
The main bedroom’s solar-powered “fresh air” skylights above the bed bring in natural light and cool breezes. The advanced skylights capture any available daylight, and use it to recharge a highly efficient, fully concealed battery powered operator and control system.
The skylights include blue blinds that coordinate with the bedroom’s bright color scheme. "The Velux skylights in here have almost an identical shade of blue to the wall color, and that was on purpose to keep it from being busy," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.
A wall-mounted HVAC unit was included on one of the main bedroom’s walls. “By placing mini-split heat pumps through out the house, we increase the occupant’s comfort as each space can be controlled independently,” says build manager Dylan Eastman. “It is also an easier way to install this modern convenience in an old home where duct work may be impractical.”
The main bedroom’s painted utility-grade pine floor in different widths was sprayed with a thick white enamel boat-like finish, that creates a super-shiny floor that bounces light everywhere.
A vintage Danish modern credenza creates a stylish storage solution on this side of the main bedroom, with a warm wood tone that coordinates with the other vintage pieces in the space.
Designer Brian Patrick Flynn commissioned this wooden lighthouse wall art by Nashville artist Adam Keafer, who fell in love with the local Portland, Maine, region during a visit, to decorate the wall above the vintage credenza.
The adjoining main bathroom coordinates with the color scheme and style of the main bedroom, with a beautiful custom-made ombre vanity with drawers painted in different shades of blue.

Double hanging rods inside the main bedroom closet for shirts, pants, casual tops and more make it easy to find just the right outfit for the day ahead.
Like the main bedroom, the main closet includes a touch of vintage style. "This is an old catalog system that's industrial and made with these drawers that were molds," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. "They're the right scale to hold belts and ties."
An alcove in the main closet includes shelves that offer easy-access storage for shoes. This eliminates clutter on the floor, and wasted time looking for shoes scattered throughout the closet.
The abundance of natural light and the lush landscape outside helps this main bedroom feel like a private retreat, where you can relax and escape the stress of the day.
