Outdoor Spaces at HGTV Dream Home 2015

The outdoor areas of HGTV Dream Home 2015 offer a finished appearance with traditional plantings and accents. Anchoring the house to the landscape will be a mix of evergreens such as glossy leafed English hollies, Japanese ilex, flowering spirea and Hinoki cypress and climbing roses. "It's a relaxed look with flowering plants for four seasons of interest," says Cammie Naylor, landscape designer for Donaroma's Nursery & Landscape Services, Edgartown, Massachusetts, who was hired to design and install the landscaping.

"The house offers a sense of home and place," adds lead architect Patrick Ahearn. "The driveway is almost secondary."

This classic approach to landscaping includes the use of hydrangeas and clipped boxwoods that are both low maintenance and in keeping with the cottage-style feel prevalent in this area. Out back, a natural privacy screen of Leyland cypress, native cedar trees, maple trees and inkberry gives a sense of enclosure without obscuring the views of the grassy plains filled with blooming native plants such as Queen Anne’s lace, goldenrod, native perennial asters, butterfly weed, bayberry and beach plum bushes beyond.

Weatherproof fabric on the cushions is rendered in charcoal and white for a reason. "We kept it neutral so it would not compete with the beautiful views," says Linda Woodrum, the interior designer.
Summer is the high season on the Vineyard with its glorious weather and sun filled skies. "The setting is conducive to sitting outside," says Jack Thomasson, the house planner. To that end, each of the guest rooms has it's own outdoor patio accessed through French doors so guests can retreat to their own private space. These outdoor rooms are each bordered by a six-foot tall hedge lending a European courtyard feel, says Ahearn.

"Three couples could come here at once and each could have their own private outdoor spaces," says Thomasson. As an added bonus, a large outdoor shower hidden off the main patio out back is the perfect place to wash off the sand after a day at the beach.
