Ali and the Property Brothers Tackle a Huge Indoor-Outdoor Remodel
Things didn’t always come so easily for comedian Ali Wong, but her close friend Citadelle has always been there for her (and appreciated Ali's beloved brand of humor). When Ali arrived in California at the age of 18, Citadelle opened up space in her home for Ali while she went on auditions. Ali joked she ate all Citadelle's food and used her car. So years later, Ali knew it was time to give back in a big way. “Her friendship has been such a gift. She’s like a sister to me," said Ali. "I was supposed to stay there for two weeks and it ended up being a year.” Determined to update her friend’s home in a magnificent way, Ali partnered with Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott. Together, they would update the entire lower-level of Citadelle’s home inside and out.

Ali Presents Her Friend Citadelle With a New, Functional Living Area
“I had this feeling when I met Citadelle and our friends, like, I finally found my tribe,” said Ali. “Citadelle is the rock of our group of friends and the rock of her family. I hope this gives her well-deserved relief and joy. It’s the least I could do for someone who has done so much.” Together with the Property Brothers, Ali redesigns her friend’s home, transforming an under-whelming basement and backyard into a show-stopping family space.
The Living Room, Before
The lower level of Citadelle’s house served as a makeshift work-from-home office space, but the functionality wasn’t ideal for family movie nights or for girls' night hangouts. Ali knew that this room was the hub of their home and wanted to make sure it was a place that they could continue to feel comfortable. With the designer's help, they relocated the office and worked to make the basement living room more suitable for both playing with the kids and entertaining friends.

The updated living room includes midcentury accents like a large, comfortable sectional and a dark blue leather lounge chair. The bros eliminated the fireplace and hung two large-scale pieces of art in its place. Colorful art also hangs over the family’s sofa. Durable engineered hardwoods in a whitewashed finish flow throughout the basement. In the corner of the room, the shelving unit was revamped into a dry bar with a mini fridge and storage for beverages and glassware.
The Living Room, Before
Ali knew Citadelle’s office needed to be relocated from the family’s living room, but she also wanted to transform the space into a room where it would be comfortable to host friends, have girls’ nights and play with the kids. The giant basement living room would be upgraded to be a livable, comfortable space, leveled up to suit Citadelle’s true style.

The designers went to great lengths to help the lower-level living room feel big and bright. They replaced the sliding glass doors with 8-foot wide, black-framed French doors, which encourage traffic flow between the living room and the new, covered pergola in the backyard. Dimmable recessed lights and long curtains allow the bright space to function as a cozy theater for family movie nights.

The designers maintained the general orientation of the living room furniture, pointing a large comfortable sectional toward a wall-mounted television. Recessed lights illuminate the new space and help it feel bigger. A midcentury modern sideboard contains games and electronics. The television cords now run behind the wall to help declutter the space. Down the hallway, the designers also updated a guest room and bathroom.
The Bathroom, Before
An old bathroom in the lower level of the home had a tiny standing shower and dated tiles. Ali had a vision to remodel it into a kid-free, spa-like retreat with a huge bathtub where Citadelle could relax. When the crew opened up the walls around the shower they found extensive termite damage, but fortunately for the timeline of the project, the damage was caught early and contained.
The Bathroom, After
The design team removed the small shower and reoriented the entire bathroom to accommodate a large soaking bathtub. Blue-gray tiles in a herringbone pattern surround the spa-like tub. Centered stone on the floors and a custom vanity add polish, taking the bathroom from livable to luxurious.
The Guest Room and Office, After
A bedroom previously reserved as a guest room was updated to be more multipurpose so it could also function as Citadelle’s home office. Working from home is hard from the middle of your family room, so this dedicated space provides a quiet sanctuary for Citadelle to focus. Midcentury furnishings add polish and personality to the new office while engineered hardwood floors add warmth.
The Guest Room and Office, After
The design team installed a custom Murphy bed into the office to accommodate overnight visitors. The modern design of the bed incorporates decorative shelves that do not need to be disturbed when the bed is in-use — rather than folding down, they swing to the side. A space-saving pocket door was also installed. The formerly drab guest room now presents like a boutique hotel.
The Patio, Before
Citadelle’s backyard begged for updates. The designers envisioned it as a family-friendly space, but knew the sloping concrete patio would need to be fixed. The "hot cocoa" brown paint, a color described by Citadelle herself, would also be updated as part of the exterior remodel.
The Patio, After
The design team transformed Citadelle’s backyard into a space meant for entertaining. The new 8-foot French doors in the living room open into a covered lounge space with a fireplace. An outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill and mini-fridge allows Citadelle to host all her friends and family at once. A concrete slab surrounded by loose stones and turf provide a cohesive, well-designed space ready for the whole family.
The Patio, After
White paint and black trim on the house, as well as a covered pergola, transform the entire backyard experience. Bulked-up and stuccoed posts make the structure substantial and balanced with the existing home. Comfortable furnishings welcome guests to kick back and relax, while the rest of the grassy yard allows kids to freely play.
The Patio, After
The design team eliminated Citadelle’s indoor fireplace but didn’t want to lose the ambiance that it offered for entertaining. The new 10-foot freestanding fireplace is covered with a neutral tile. It features double-layer glass so that it’s safer to use around small children. Lush tropical plants round out the landscaping and transform the covered patio into an oasis.
