Battle on the Beach: Team Taniya
For the third season of Battle on the Beach, Build It Forward host Taniya Nayak (who was the Season 1 winner) mentored husband-and-wife duo Kelsey and Ryan, who are from Uniontown, Ohio. “We are DIY and home renovation content creators,” Kelsey says. However, with just two flips under their belt, Taniya admitted they still have a lot to learn. She encouraged them to be creative and take risks while embarking on this six-week challenge and further honing their skills.

The Teams: Season 3
Kelsey and Ryan showed they had DIY construction and design chops when they brought their all against the opposing teams: Ashley and Steve, business partners mentored by Rock the Block host Ty Pennington, and Pete and Ben, business partners led by Windy City Rehab host Alison Victoria. During the six-week challenge, teams had to fully renovate a rundown beach house, breathing new life into the kitchen, dining room, living room, master suite, guest room and bathrooms — all in an effort to add the most value to their property. While past seasons featured identical homes, this season had two identical properties plus one that was slightly bigger. The starting value of the smaller homes (which Kelsey and Ryan had) was $777,000, while the larger home rang up at $817,500.

The Kitchen Challenge, Before
When Kelsey and Ryan first stepped foot into their kitchen, they were instantly hit with things that needed to be done. Well beyond a fresh coat of paint, the couple wanted to remove the peninsula and replace it with a standalone island, install wrap-around cabinets and maximize storage wherever possible. Taniya was on board with the idea but was quick to encourage them to be creative with their design process so that their kitchen wouldn’t just look like any other.
The Kitchen Challenge, After
To breathe new life into their kitchen, Kelsey and Ryan opted for cabinets with a light wood finish, which they laid in an L-shape along the back walls. They upgraded the sink, installed new countertops and added an island large enough to comfortably accommodate five chairs.
The Kitchen Challenge, After
To add character to their space, Kelsey and Ryan opted for a high-contrast color palette with light cabinetry and dark countertops, paired with a dark island topped with white marble. Additionally, they added an old porthole window into their kitchen. With the help of their carpenter, they were able to make it fully functional so it could open from both the inside and out — a clever addition, especially for homeowners looking to entertain.
Judges’ Reaction
When all was said and done, Kelsey and Ryan spent $25,969 for their kitchen makeover, coming in just under $1,000 over their initially planned $25,000 budget. But, as beautiful as their kitchen looked, it wasn’t enough to nab a win from judges Sarah and Bryan Baeumler of Renovation Island.
“Out of all three, your kitchen offered the most amount of storage space, and from a functionality perspective, I actually think it worked the best,” Sarah said. “You capitalized on your window placement. Everywhere I looked, I had a stunning view, and you even had those whimsical moments of using a porthole window in the kitchen.”
As much as Sarah enjoyed their space, though, Bryan couldn’t get behind such a sexy, dark kitchen at the beach.

The Main Suite, Before
Week two of the Battle on the Beach Season 3 was spent transforming the main suite. In past seasons, the main suite was already an established space within the home. This season, teams had to choose which of the two bedrooms would serve as their main bedroom and bathroom. When considering their options, Kelsey and Ryan decided to renovate the smaller one. “We want to take the bigger bedroom and cut it in half to create an extra bedroom,” Kelsey said.

Because the main suit is smaller, Kelsey and Ryan wanted to make it feel extra bright and airy. “We’ll steal some space from the guest area to create a grande en-suite complete with a walk-in shower and double vanity,” Kelsey said. “We’ll run vinyl planking from the bathroom into the bedroom, where we’ll keep things light and bright with white walls and hanging pendants.” In total, they hoped to spend no more than $20,000.
The Main Suite, After
During the second week of the competition, teams were taken to Charles Phillips Antiques & Architecturals, where they were given $500 to spend on vintage items that would add charm to their designs. When scouring Charles Phillips Antiques and Architecturals, Kelsey and Ryan found an $875 green antique dresser which they planned to transform into a double vanity — which Taniya loved. They also bought $98 French doors, which they thought would work perfectly leading into the en suite bathroom.
The Main Suite, After
Kelsey and Ryan perfected a blend of old and new for a fresh-yet-cozy bathroom that judges Sarah and Bryan loved. However, Bryan wasn't a fan of the pebble flooring in the shower, because he finds it uncomfortable.
Judges' Reactions
All in all, Bryan and Sarah were impressed with Kelsey and Ryan’s design, which came in under budget at just $18,660. “I appreciate what you did in the space. Although the actual footprint was on the smaller side, you made sure all of the accommodations you would [want] in a primary bedroom were there,” Sarah said, specifically applauding the storage and lighting.
Still, given the close quarters — and the competition — it wasn’t enough for Team Taniya to take home the win.

The Living Room, Before
The third week of the competition was dedicated to renovating and designing the living room. “We plan on upping the value of this living room by creating a multifunctional space,” Kelsey said, noting that they budgeted $11,000 for the transformation. “We’ll carry the modern vibe from the kitchen [into the living room] and create a custom black, wooden slab fireplace that will be the room’s centerpiece. Faux beams, a porthole window and tons of seating will complete the look.”
The Living Room, After
Bryan and Sarah loved Kelsey and Ryan’s living room design. “You carved out a space to create an entryway when you’re loading in all your suitcases, groceries and everything. This is a great dumping ground for all that stuff,” Sarah said.
The Living Room, After
Beyond the entryway, Kelsey and Ryan created a cozy seating area situated between their newly added built-in fireplace and windows overlooking the ocean.
The Living Room, After
Mirroring the kitchen, Kelsey and Ryan added a porthole window to the living room, offering another spot to not only look out to the ocean but to reach out to the exterior of the home. As Sarah mentioned during the kitchen challenge, this is an especially smart choice for those who love to entertain.
The Judges Weigh In
While Bryan was immediately drawn to the integrated design of the fireplace nook, both he and Sarah admitted it likely didn’t add a whole lot of value to the home as a whole. Instead, Bryan said he would've liked to see another cozy couch in the unique space.
Final Decisions
There were elements in Kelsey and Ryan’s living room Bryan and Sarah loved, such as the reconfigured layout that still felt open and airy. “And you still took advantage of all the lighting and the natural views,” Sarah added. That said, Bryan felt the seating arrangement was a bit too clinical. Though they didn't win the living room challenge, they did stay on budget, spending exactly $11,000.

The Guest Room, Before
During the fourth week of the Battle on the Beach competition, teams were tasked with transforming their guest rooms into suites fit for families. Kelsey and Ryan chose to divide their L-shaped guest room into two smaller guest rooms, with one targeted toward adults and one to kids.
The Guest Room, After
Ryan and Kelsey transformed the smaller of the two bedrooms into an airy retreat perfect for both singles and couples. The sleek and minimal design boasts an accent wall that leads up into the ceiling, making the room appear larger.
The Guest Room, After
Enter the kids' room. Kelsey and Ryan installed custom, oversized bunk beds to create the ultimate hangout space. Then, to make it an especially fun dwelling, they outfitted the beds with color-changing LED lights, hung eye-catching wallpaper and added bean bag seating.
The Guest Room, After
Knowing kids love to sit back and watch television, Kelsey and Ryan added a large-screen projector in their space. This was one feature Bryan and Sarah instantly loved.
The Guest Room, After
While the kids' room was spacious enough for four or more kids, Bryan and Sarah pointed out how small the closet was in comparison. For that many kiddos, they would have liked to see more storage.
The Guest Bathroom, After
After splitting their guest room into two separate spaces, Team Taniya was challenged with crafting an all-new bathroom — and Kelsey and Ryan were up to it. With well-laid tile, a vanity and a tub, the cozy space offered all the necessities in a stylish and smart way.
The Judges Weigh In
Team Taniya's extra bathroom stole the show. Bryan and Sarah gave them the guest suite win.
And the Winner Is...
When setting out on their guest room transformation, Kelsey and Ryan allotted $20,000 for the project. In the end, they spent $20,370 — and going over paid off. It was the first challenge they won of the competition!

The Exterior, Before
For the fifth week, teams focused on transforming the exterior of their home. After winning the guest suite competition, Kelsey and Ryan were feeling hopeful for a second win.
The Exterior, After
Team Taniya knew they wanted to give their home a bright, cheerful facelift. They installed board-and-batten siding and doused it in a fresh coat of mint green paint. To add visual intrigue, they went with bright white for the trim. Kelsey and Ryan smartly added a playful touch beneath the deck, too: A pair of rope swings positioned toward the ocean.
The Exterior, After
Up on the porch, Kelsey and Ryan had a clear vision for their design. “We’ll make the most out of our deck by including a lounge area with a firepit for the cool summer nights and adding a ceiling fan for when it gets hot,” Kelsey said. In the center of the deck, they installed a spacious dining section to make up for the small dining area inside and to allow for meals with a view. “On the far end of the deck, we’ll have a custom kitchen countertop with a grill area. If budget allows, we’ll add a sink," Kelsey said.
The Exterior Challenge
The competitors were tasked with a challenge involving communication. Each team had no more than five or ten minutes to meet with their mentor, carpenter and builder (separately) to come up with a detailed plan for the outdoor shed. Then the carpenter shut the door and got to work with the renovations. "[Teams] won’t see the space again until after they’ve been judged,” Ty revealed.
The Exterior, After
Bryan and Sarah were instantly impressed with Kelsey and Ryan's space. From the storage shed — which the couple transformed into a bathroom complete with a private toilet area, a spacious changing area and hidden storage behind sliding doors — to the well-executed deck, team Taniya's outdoor area had it all.
Judges Weigh In
In total, Kelsey and Ryan had just $216 left over after all their renovations — but cutting it close was worth it. “Some of the [touches] you put on the interior of the home also worked on the exterior,” Sarah said. “The porthole windows (which can be used as a pass-through from the kitchen to your exterior food prep area) was a wonderful addition.” Though Bryan would've liked to see a cleaner, smoother deck, it wasn't enough to keep Kelsey and Ryan from taking home their second consecutive weekly win.

Final Fixes
After announcing the exterior challenge winner, Bryan and Sarah told teams that they had until the end of the day to make final fixes on their homes before a group of local realtors came to appraise each property. Budgets had run out, so they gave each team $5,000 to address trouble areas in their homes.

And the Winner Is...
Team Taniya spent their $5,000 on a new dining table, under-mount lighting for the kitchen island and extra storage in the kids' room, main bedroom and outside by the grill. All of these additions made for a more functional beach home, but they weren’t enough for Team Taniya to take home the win.
