Battle on the Beach: Team Ty
For the third season of Battle on the Beach, Rock the Block host Ty Pennington mentored business partners Ashely and Steve. Based out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the home renovators have worked on dozens of projects, including flips and fresh builds. Ashley, a carpenter, recently teamed up with Steve (who's been in the business for more than 20 years) after he helped her build her first home. Together, they know that they can take on any project.

The Teams: Season 3
Ashley and Steve went up against two other teams: Kelsey and Ryan, a husband-and-wife duo mentored by Build It Forward host Taniya Nayak, and Pete and Ben, business partners led by Windy City Rehab host Alison Victoria. Each team had six weeks and $90,000 to transform a rundown beach house into a getaway-worthy abode. And, for the first time ever, the houses weren’t identical, so the hosts played a game for picking order. Team Ty took home the win, and they selected the house with the most square footage.
The Kitchen Challenge, Before
Because Ashley and Steve were able to choose their home first, they had the most flexibility when it came to renovating the kitchen. Knowing how much potential a cook space has to add value to a home — which Ty reiterated — the design duo decided to bring theirs forward to the front of the house. “This will open things up and give it a more functional layout while offering more space in the back of the house for a future project,” Ashley said.
The Kitchen Challenge, After
Ashley and Steve's renovated beachside kitchen feels warm and inviting thanks to natural cabinet finishes, open shelving, a stone backsplash, a retro-inspired fridge and an intricately detailed island to bring it all together.
The Kitchen Challenge, After
When designing their space, Ashley and Steve created a multidimensional appeal by combining modern elements with rustic accents and vintage touches. While wood floors, white countertops and a bronze hood vent bring a modern ambiance, a hand-laid stone backsplash and the wooden island pay homage to the past.
The Kitchen Challenge, After
Ty's team made the smart move to outfit the custom island with storage, as well as a microwave.
Team Ty Takes the Kitchen Win
Ashley and Steve spent $27,650 (nearly $3,000 over their budget), but the splurge was well worth it. When it came time for judges Sarah and Bryan Baeumler of Renovation Island to weigh in, Ty asked them to share a one-word first impression. Bryan said “Love.”
“It’s very well layered,” Sarah added. “To me, it feels like this wonderful mix of been-here-forever and new-and-fresh. So to me, it’s almost like a generational kitchen, which I love.”
“Walking into your kitchen, I felt like I was visiting an old family member," agreed Bryan. "I felt like I was going somewhere I had been a hundred times before, and it's just warm and welcoming and inviting."

The Main Suite, Before
Week two of the Battle on the Beach Season 3 was spent transforming the main suite. In past seasons, the main suite was already an established space within the home. This year, teams chose which of two bedrooms would serve as their main bedroom and bathroom. Luckily for Ashley and Steve — the only team whose home had a bedroom balcony — their decision was an easy one.
The Main Suite, After
Ashley and Steve’s goal when planning their main suite — on which they hoped to spend no more than $20,000 — was to create a sexy and serene space to relax and unwind. Part of executing their plan meant crafting a custom-made bed to stand front and center in the space. Above it, they built a one-of-a-kind headboard accent using antique vintage hurricane shutters, which they purchased with the $500 each of the teams was given to spend at Charles Phillips Antiques and Architecturals.
The Main Suite, After
Ashley and Steve spent the remainder of their antique stipend on a set of arched doors to make the entrance to their en suite bathroom feel as luxurious as possible. They cost $285 but made a major statement.
The Main Suite, After
In the bathroom, Steve laid $3,100 worth of tile, which he and Ashley hoped would make the space look spa-like. Unfortunately, Bryan and Sarah felt that the tilework was messy, which, combined with the lack of storage in the space, made for a less-than-stellar bathroom review.
Judges' Reactions
However, Bryan and Sarah loved many aspects of the bathroom — which Ashley and Steve pulled off under budget, at $19,458. “I felt like I had arrived in Bali,” Bryan said. “I loved the vibe. I liked the treatment on the walls. I liked the little birdhouse and privacy screen outside [on the balcony, and] the antique wall panels around the bed.”

The Living Room, Before
The third week of competition was spent renovating and designing the living room. The goal: Create as much added value as possible, and tailor the space to the beachside market. To kick things off, Ashley and Steve vowed to use $16,000 of their budget to make the living room more functional while staying true to the cozy Mediterranean vibe woven throughout the rest of the home.
The Living Room, After
Ty wasn't originally on board with Ashley and Steve's idea to create a mirrored accent wall. However, the duo was so set on using it to reflect sunlight and waves that Ty trusted their imaginative design.
The Living Room, After
A curved bench and built-in bookshelf lines the perimeter of the room. While Bryan and Sarah loved the shelving, they thought the bench was too high (Ashley and Steve had to build it above the outlets).
The Living Room, After
In addition to the curved bench, Ashley and Steve added casual, midcentury modern chairs to the center of the space in an effort to maximize seating options and take advantage of the ocean view.
The Living Room, After
During the living room challenge, Ashley and Steve went the extra mile to add a powder room to their space. However, Bryan and Sarah decided that it would be factored into the overall appraisal of the house — not the living room challenge.
Judges’ Reactions
The moment Bryan and Sarah walked into Ashley and Steve’s house, they were in awe of the comfortable, casual vibe that felt spot-on for the beach. Where Sarah liked the variety of seating, Bryan enjoyed how the mirrored wall made everything feel bigger.
And the Winner Is ...
Bryan and Sarah awarded Ashley and Steve the $3,000 cash prize for the living room challenge — and that’s on top of coming in under budget on their build. While they felt there were a few things that could be improved (such as the size of the ceiling beams and the height and edges of the curved bench), overall they loved the warm, family-friendly space.

The Guest Room, Before
After winning the $3,000 cash prize for the living room challenge, Ashley and Steve were feeling good moving into the fourth week of the Battle on the Beach competition. Still, they didn't want to get sidetracked by their success, so they kept their momentum going by coming up with a plan for their guest suite. They vowed to spend no more than $15,000.
The Guest Room, After
Ashley and Steve took space from what was previously the kitchen to expand their guest suite.
The Guest Room, After
In an unconventional move, they created one "mega bed" by combining two queen beds. They thought guests could lay feet-to-feet, or a bounty of kids could pile in next to each other for the ultimate beach-sleepover experience.
The Guest Bathroom, After
Ashley and Steve made a point to make their guest bathroom as chic as possible. They went with a wide vanity, a walk-in shower, a bold tiled accent wall and modern finishes.
The Guest Bathroom, After
While Bryan isn't usually the biggest fan of green (which he made clear while touring Team Alison's home), he was impressed by the well-laid tiles in Team Ty's bathroom. Sarah enjoyed the colorplay, noting that the rest of the house boasted a more neutral palette.
The Judges Weigh In
As intrigued as Bryan and Sarah were by the extra-large bed in Ashley and Steve's guest room, it couldn't compete with Team Taniya's design. Luckily, they came in under budget at $13,500.

The Exterior, Before
Week five was all about the exterior. While the other two teams had identical decks, Ashley and Steve had more space to work with, so they budgeted just over $14,000 — the remainder of their funds — to the project. “[Our house has] a lot of character; we knew it would be a lot of work but if we can pull it off, it’s going to be good,” Ashley said.
The Exterior, After
The other teams opted for minty, nautical color palettes, but Ashley and Steve switched it up. “We’re pulling out all the stops for our beachfront oasis by going with a rich, black paint color for our board-and-batten siding with white trim to make it pop,” Ashley said. "We’ll completely transform the tattered porch with new screens, weather-proof composite flooring and fresh siding."
The Exterior, After
Ashley and Steve put almost all their effort into the screened-in porch. They outfitted it with a relaxing lounge area, as well as a cozy dining nook — an indoor-outdoor touch Sarah loved.
The Exterior, After
The competitors were tasked with a challenge involving communication. Each team had no more than five or ten minutes to meet with their mentor, carpenter and builder (separately) to come up with a detailed plan for the outdoor shed. Then the carpenter shut the door and got to work with the renovations. "[Teams] won’t see the space again until after they’ve been judged,” Ty revealed.
The Exterior, After
Team Ty invested in a screened-in porch and an added bathroom — which Bryan and Sarah were particularly fond of. “Walking into the 'communication room,' I’m a big fan," Bryan exclaimed. "Love the baby bamboo — it’s got that beach feel. Antique windows are really cool, you get different light in there. It kind of feels like you want to do a little prayer before you go in and change." At the end of the week, the duo had just $18 left over.
Judges Weigh In
As much as Bryan and Sarah liked the 'communication room' and screened-in porch, they wished Ashley and Steve made the most of their entire deck — not just a small portion of it. Unfortunately, Team Ty's choice to ignore the extra square footage lost them the exterior competition.

Final Fixes
After announcing the exterior challenge winner, Bryan and Sarah told teams that they had until the end of the day to make final fixes on their homes before a group of local realtors came to appraise each property. Budgets had run out, so they gave each team $5,000 to address trouble areas in their homes.

And the Winner Is...
Team Ty used their $5,000 on an outdoor shower, a grill and paint and grout touch-ups in the main bedroom and bathroom. Then, to gain some extra storage space (per Bryan and Sarah's recommendation), they installed under-sink shelving in the bathroom. These relatively simple fixes made a big difference. When the local real estate experts arrived to appraise the houses, they discovered Team Ty’s grew the most in value. Ashley, Steve and Ty took the title of Battle on the Beach Season 3 champions.
