With that in mind, we scoured the web and chatted with the pros to uncover the most beloved outdoor furniture brands. Design Within Reach is one of the most frequented retailers among the pros. “When I’m looking for modern lines and iconic shapes, DWR is a go-to,” says Storie Collective Founder and Creative Director Sara Swabb. “They carry great licensed designs, and the materials usually hold up really well.”

Melissa is also a fan of the brand. “It offers a wide range of styles and high-quality materials, so it’s easy to find something that suits your aesthetic and your space,” she says. “I also love that they carry a variety of performance fabrics — you get the soft, elevated look of indoor textiles with the durability required for outdoor living.” Additionally, she loves that DWR sells furniture covers designed specifically for their pieces. “It may seem like a small detail, but it makes a big difference when the covers actually stay put and don’t blow away with the first gust of wind,” she points out.

What to Consider When Shopping For Outdoor Furniture

The goal is to create a beautiful outdoor space that you want to spend ample time in. To create such a space, though, it’s important to consider more than just aesthetics alone when shopping for outdoor furniture. “Outdoor furniture needs to be beautiful and built for real life,” Michael says. With that in mind, the pros say to pay attention to the six characteristics below when shopping for seating, lounging and dining designs designated for the outdoors.

• Durability: “If you have kids or entertain often, look for tough materials like powder-coated metal, high-performance resin, or composite stone — they’ll hold up to spills, wear and weather,” Michael says. Meanwhile, Melissa makes a case for teak and aluminum, both of which tend to be more lightweight. “These hold up well in the elements, and teak will age beautifully with the right care,” she says.
• Maintenance: “Some materials require more care than others, so it’s worth considering how much upkeep you’re willing to take on,” Melissa says. “For example, teak naturally weathers to a silvery grey over time and needs a thorough cleaning once or twice a year — but if you want to preserve its original golden tone, you’ll need to seal it regularly. Likewise, cushions can last for years if you keep them clean and bring them inside when not in use. Knowing what your furniture needs upfront helps you get the most life out of your investment.”
• Climate Compatibility: “Consider your climate — not all furniture is built to endure intense sun, humidity, salt air or harsh winters,” says Regan Billingsley of Regan Billingsley Interiors. “Choosing pieces constructed with materials suited to your specific environment ensures longevity and helps avoid the cycle of frequent replacement that adds to landfills.” While well-made covers can help protect your furniture in various climates, for best wear, Michael says to prioritize rust-resistant materials for coastal environments. “Marine-grade stainless steel or teak holds up best in salty air,” he adds.
• Fade-Proof Fabrics: “Outdoor upholstery should always be solution-dyed acrylic (like Sunbrella or Perennials) so it resists UV rays, mildew and moisture,” Michael says. “Also, make sure to spot treat regularly — outdoor does not mean it won't stain.”
• Protective Covers: “Even the best materials benefit from a little protection,” Melissa says. “Bringing cushions inside when not in use or using well-fitted furniture covers can significantly extend the life of your pieces.”
• Proper Scale: As excited as you are to design your outdoor space, make sure not to over-purchase and overcrowd the area. “Outdoor furniture should feel generous but not oversized,” Michael says. “Think about flow, views and how people will actually move through and use the space; you don't want to take away from the landscaping because you have too much furniture. It's all a balance.” Tacking onto that, DuVäl says that “smaller areas might benefit from compact bistro sets, while larger patios can accommodate sectionals or dining sets.”
