How to Craft Bavarian Flower Crowns for Oktoberfest

Make this year's Oktoberfest the best with these photo-ready DIY flower crowns that pair alpine-inspired faux blooms with the blue and white palette that's symbolic of Bavaria, the home of Germany's official Oktoberfest celebrations.

Materials Needed

faux blue and white blooms: like daisies, asters, cornflowers and white lupine
faux greenery filler or faux baby's breath

floral wire
wire snips or heavy-duty shears

Create Wire Framework

Wrap floral wire loosely around the top of your head, three times (Image 1). Remove and tightly wrap the wire's end to form a hoop that's just a bit larger than the top of your head (Image 2).

Prep Faux Flowers

Using wire snips or heavy-duty shears, cut faux bloom branches (Image 1) into shorter lengths that are approximately 4 to 6 inches long. Stack like blooms together (Image 2).

Create Crown's Center

Starting in the center of the wire form (opposite where you wrapped the end), use floral wire to securely attach the main flower grouping that alternates a pair of white flowers (Image 1), centered by a single cornflower (Image 2). Note: Cornflowers are not only beautiful and the perfect shade of Prussian blue, they're also the German state flower.

Attach Blooms to Wire Form

Working your way out from the center, wire on blooms and greenery filler, overlapping flower color, texture and size as you go. Continue wiring on small flower bunches that mix white and blue blooms with greenery filler, until you reach the back of the crown.

Fill In Any Gaps

While looking in a mirror, try on your crown and examine it from all angles to ensure that it looks full from above, below and on all sides. If you spot any gaps, cut a few short blooms (Image 1) and wire them on to fill in (Image 2).

Get Your German (and Your Party!) On

Pairing your finished flower crown with an authentic or costume dirndl, the traditional tracht (or folk dress) of German women, makes wearing your flower crown even more fun! If kids will be part of your Oktoberfest celebrations, make a smaller matching crown for your mini me (Image 1). And, be sure to include friendly furkids in the Oktoberfest fun, too (Image 2).
