Bathtub Overflow Gaskets

How do you know if your overflow gasket has failed? Check for a water stain on the ceiling below the bathtub.

If you overfill the bathtub, the water will find this overflow drain before it finds the floor. Behind this cover is the overflow gasket, and it attaches to the drain. It creates a watertight seal that prevents leaks. These overflow gaskets loosen, crack or rot over time, and need to be replaced. Here are some tips to keep your gasket maintenance covered.

• Check the screws on the overflow drain cover annually to make sure the seal is snug. Don't over-tighten.
  
• Check the gasket for wear and tear once a year and replace if necessary.
  
• Call a licensed plumber if the gasket or the overflow drain that the gasket attaches to spring a leak.

With proper maintenance an overflow gasket should last about 10 years before it needs to be replaced. Installing a replacement will reduce other repair costs such as damage to your floor and ceiling, and keep you from blowing a gasket yourself.
