Sure, there is certainly a place for a crisp white door, but sometimes, a little of pop of color can bring an otherwise drab space to life. And why stop there? We'll show you how to blend a mix of complementary colors in a creative way that will energize your space and have all your friends running to the nearest paint store.

Remove Door and Hardware

The first step is to take down the door. Once it is dismounted, remove the hardware and wipe the door clean of dust and debris.

Evenly coat the entirety of the door with a stain-hiding, sealing primer. Let dry fully. This will drastically increase the overall quality of the final paint coats.

We used three colors to create our masterpiece, so we taped the door off accordingly. The goal is to tape a series of horizontal two-tone stripes that break, or stagger, along the raised areas of the door face. You should arrange the tape so that it can be pulled off in two steps, so be careful to get it perfectly aligned but not overlapped. Carefully clean the edges with a utility knife and give your tape layout a final check.

Once your door is taped off, paint the base color on the entire surface of the door. Once dry, pull one side of each stripe off and tape where necessary in order to paint your first complementary stripe over the exposed primer. Once dry, remove the remaining tape and repeat this process to paint your second complementary color over the exposed primer.
Re-Install Hardware and Complete

Once your final stripe is dry, re-install all of the door hardware and hang your door. All that’s left is to show off your handiwork!
