Out of the Gray: The Ayub Project
Interior designer Jennifer Todryk of No Demo Reno adds texture to a cutom hood as part of the renovation of the home of Naz and Umer Ayub. After moving from California, the Ayubs hope that Jenn can transform their new and neutral-gray house into a home that packs more visual punch and personality. "We like the floor plan," said Naz, "we just kind of want to make it feel more like a home now."
The Ayub Project
Jenn works on a cheeseboard center piece in the Ayub's newly renovated kitchen, a staging detail prior to the final reveal. "A lot of times clients hire me to personalize their space," says Jenn, "to make them feel settled and to make them enter their home and be like, 'This is my house.'"
The Ayub Project
Kitchen, Before. The Ayub's renovation budget was $85,000, and Jenn and team had 6 weeks to complete the project. Prior to the renovation, the Ayub's kitchen is spacious but visually bland and lacking in personality. For their update, the homeowners requested that Jenn incorporate modern, fun tiling as well as Moroccan accents.
The Ayub Project
Kitchen, After. In the renovated kitchen, the dull and dated floor tile is replaced with striking black hex tile, providing sharp contrast within the light and airy new palette. The kitchen's informal dining space features a new table and window seat.

Kitchen, After. Highlights in the renovation include a new custom vent hood, stone backsplash, reworked kitchen island with lower profile, white stone countertops, new bar seating and twin swag lamps with metal shades.
The Ayub Project
Kitchen, Detail. Natural wood elements, like the open shelving and decorative tray, help add warmth in the newly renovated space.

Living Room, Before. The kitchen-adjacent living area, prior to the renovation, is functional and spacious, with dramatic high ceilings but, in terms of furnishings and overall feel, is visually plain, boring and dated. It's one of the rooms the homeowners describe as having "too much gray."
The Ayub Project
Living Room, After. Relatively simple and modest changes, with no changes to the floor plan, combine to create an enhanced and dramatically different ambiance — with bold contrasts, natural wood finishes and comfortable, inviting furnishings in contemporary style.
The Ayub Project
Living Room, After. New full-length window treatments in rich navy, a contemporary console in dark finish and large-scale decorative mirror all help accentuate the open and dramatic feel of the space while the vintage rug helps tie together the colors of the room.
The Ayub Project
Living Room, After. The walls are freshly painted in a bright, neutral white that blends well with the rest of the house. "Honestly [the living room] was more about decor and the right size furniture," says Jenn, "and how to bring some life to this space."

Main Bath, After. A new tub and glass-enclosed shower are star attractions in the newly remodeled bath.

Main Bath, After. The bathroom gets a dramatic visual makeover with a much brighter palette, and a reworked double-vanity with added drawer storage and handmade Moroccan tile in soft green shades.
The Ayub Project
Main Bath, After. "I feel like I went from motel bathroom," says Naz, "to peaceful, tranquil, unique — like, this is my statement piece."
The Ayub Project
Bedroom, After. The newly remodeled main bedroom features a new chandelier light-fixture in chrome finish and modern upholstered chairs for window seating.

Bedroom, After. The wall paint that Jenn chose is a pale and peaceful hue, helping to create a soothing and relaxed feel.

"There's no way that Umer and I could've come to an agreement on a lot of the different aspects that Jenn somehow incorporated," says Naz. "We're both really happy with the results, and we do genuinely feel like this is our home now."

The renovation included a smaller tub to accommodate the larger footprint of the expanded shower. Jenn takes an opportunity to check the new tub for proper fit.
