While Jo had imagined this massive hearth would rise straight to the ceiling, Chip insisted on tagging in as a "design assistant extraordinaire"—and adding "hips" for a bit of additional character.

By design, this mixed-use space is perfectly suited for entertaining and family gatherings. "Instead of everybody crowding in the kitchen," says Nancy, "we can all be together in one great room."

A Truly Great Room

Just inside the front entry, the core of the home’s open floor plan is this grand room with high vaulted ceilings and exposed beams in a space that combines living room, dining room and kitchen. “I wanted a high ceiling,” said Nancy, “and, boy, I got a high ceiling.”

Natural light from surrounding windows give the space plenty of light, which, with the help of the patterned rug, make the space feel bright and inviting.

The rustic table is accented by metal chairs and a modern centerpiece and lit by a modern chandelier, giving this dining room space a rustic, modern design that complements that of the adjacent kitchen. A gallery wall behind the table gives the space a focal point, while the striped rug beneath the table helps make this otherwise formal dining area a bit more casual.

Arched Entryway

Hosts Chip and Joanna Gaines transformed the dining room at the Batson's. They expanded the entryway to the kitchen by cutting a wide archway, which makes both the kitchen and the dining room feel larger and more open. They painted the walls a neutral gray and uncovered the shiplap at the bottom to create the look of wainscoting. Wooden box awnings add interest to the windows, and a modern, industrial chandelier illuminates the dining table.
