Ironing might not be the most thrilling activity, but after years of perfecting the art of garment care for a living, we can assure you that a high-quality ironing board and a trusty clothing iron can make ironing your clothes and sheets less of a chore!

Our tester started her career at a fashion production company in New York City, prepping garments for up to 200 fashion shows and events each year, including Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Through this experience, she learned firsthand that a reliable ironing board is essential for achieving professional results. Navigating Fifth Avenue with a full-sized ironing board wedged into the trunk of a cab was no picnic in Bryant Park, but having a reliable ironing board backstage taught her how crucial a good ironing board is when your clothes need to look their best.

We know shopping for an ironing board isn't the most exciting task, so we've done the legwork for you. We've tested and reviewed the best models out there, focusing on stability, ease of use, and functionality.

And the best part? None of the ironing boards on our list make noise like nails on a chalkboard when you open them!

How We Tested

To determine the best ironing boards on the market, we consulted multiple online buying guides, bestseller lists from online retailers including Amazon, Walmart and Target, and considered user reviews to determine which irons to test. We chose ironing boards at multiple prices up to $200 and looked for various styles and sizes. We excluded any ironing boards with fewer than four-star ratings or less than 100 reviews. Availability across multiple retailers was also a factor in our selection process.

Our tester put each ironing board to the test and observed how simple it is to put together and take down, if it felt sturdy, and if it made any annoying noises in the process. We tested each ironing board on a men’s dress shirt, a linen dress, and a pair of dress pants. Our tester noted her likes, dislikes, and opinions for each one to determine the overall winners.

What We Like
  1. Sturdy as a rock
  2. Iron rack is adjustable
  3. Cover stretches for a snug fit
What We Don't Like
  1. On the pricier side

The overall best ironing board we tested was the Brabantia Ironing Board B. Not only did it check all the boxes, but it was so easy to use and dependable that it landed on our tester’s Christmas wish list!

This ironing board opens and shuts without a peep and is built like a tank on sturdy steel legs. The wide, long surface gives you plenty of space to work with for larger items like clothing or sheets, and it’s adjustable to seven different heights, so you can set it to your preferred level of comfort, no matter how tall you are.

The washable pad is made of 100% cotton with a cord binder and a stretch system that keeps the cover taut while you use it. This smooth texture helps your iron glide over dress shirts, linen, and dress pants effortlessly. The iron rest has a flip-up bar you can use to park the iron upright, making it easy to grab and less likely to fall and cause an injury—an important feature if you’ll be ironing around small children or pets.

While this ironing board is a bit of an investment, it comes with a 10-year warranty, so it’s sure to last a long time. Keep in mind it’s on the heavier side and it’s large to store.

What We Like
  1. Stable, non-slip legs
  2. Collapsible
  3. Sturdy, pull-out iron rack
What We Don't Like
  1. Small surface size is limiting

Short on space? The Honey Can Do Tabletop Ironing Board is a highly functional option for those needing a compact ironing solution but still wanting the benefit of a sturdy pull-out iron rack.

One of the standout features of this ironing board is its intuitive design. The legs are positioned far enough back to create usable space underneath, perfect for ironing clothes that don’t open, like dresses, because you can still get inside and rotate the fabric around the board. These non-slip legs keep the board securely in place, preventing it from shifting around as you iron, and then collapse down for easy folding and storage.

The nose of this ironing board is a bit too wide to fit into smaller areas of clothing, and longer items like pants might prove challenging without a lot of counter space. However, if you need something small that can tuck away into a small space or fit under your bed, it’s a good bet for small living spaces, dorm rooms, or travel.

  2. Iron Rack Yes
  3. Height Adjustable No
  4. Weight 5.97 lbs
  5. Washable Cover Yes

What We Like
  1. Magnetic corners keep it from budging
  2. Easy to store flat or rolled up
  3. Lays flat without bunching under fabric
What We Don't Like
  1. Not the best for wood surfaces

This mat is so basic our tester thought she wouldn’t like it. As it turns out, simplicity is bliss with the Above Edge Magnetic Ironing Mat, which transforms any flat surface into an ironing board.

The magnetic corners are helpful to keep it securely attached if you have a metal surface like a washer or dryer. What makes it better than other mats with magnets is their placement at the corners, so you aren’t constantly ironing over them and potentially putting round-shaped dents in your fabrics. If the surface you’re working on isn’t metal, the non-slip backing will still help keep it in place.

The heat-resistant material on top doesn’t pucker or get in the way, and it does a great job of protecting surfaces, though you might not want to use it on wood because moisture does get through. Make sure it’s fully dry before storing it. Because it’s so lightweight, portable, and rolls up tightly for easy storing, it’s a great choice for apartments, dorms, on-the-go, or RVs.

What We Like
  1. Inexpensive
  2. Checks all the basic boxes
  3. Easy to set up and tear down
What We Don't Like
  1. Padding is thin and attracts fuzzies
  2. Not the sturdiest

If you’re looking for a straightforward ironing board that won’t strain your budget—especially if you’re not sure you’ll need it every day—the Amazon Basics Full Size Ironing Board might be the ideal choice for you. It offers all the essential features for effective ironing when you do need to pull it out, plus it’s light enough to be easy to handle.

This board provides a generous surface area, a frame sturdier than you might expect for its price, and a convenient height adjustment mechanism. The setup and takedown process is hassle-free, thanks to a smooth, quick, and noiseless lever, making it easy to store away after each use. While the padding is a bit thinner compared to other boards, it’s smooth and the top dimensions are well-suited for maneuvering fabric.

Though it doesn’t offer any extra flair, it covers all the basic requirements for everyday ironing needs.

  1. Surface Area 55" x 14"
  2. Iron Rack Yes
  3. Height Adjustable Adjusts to 10 different heights, up to 3.1 ft.

  5. Washable Cover Yes

What We Like
  1. Folds in half and stores iron to save space
  2. Hangs on the back of a door
  3. Sturdy legs
What We Don't Like
  1. Bump in the middle is bothersome

This space-saving ironing board brings a touch of innovation and fun to compact living. Its standout feature is its ingenious design: it folds neatly in half, featuring built-in storage for the iron that keeps everything compact and organized, minimizing clutter.

The ability to hang it on the back of a door is a true game-changer, freeing up valuable floor space and keeping your living area neat and tidy. This makes it an excellent choice for small apartments, cozy homes, or even dorm rooms where space is at a premium. Its sleek profile and stylish cover make it not only functional but also a visually appealing addition to any small space.

Despite its compact size, the board is equipped with sturdy legs that provide a stable and dependable ironing surface, ensuring you can tackle your ironing tasks efficiently without concerns about wobbling or tipping. However, the bump in the middle of the ironing surface can be a minor annoyance, as it may disrupt the smoothness of your ironing experience. While this might pose a challenge for more delicate or intricate tasks, it remains effective for handling quick ironing chores with ease.

  1. Surface Area 35.5" x 13.5"
  2. Iron Rack No
  3. Height Adjustable 18" x 6"
  4. Weight 5.8 lbs
  5. Washable Cover Yes

What to Consider Before Buying an Ironing Board

  • Ease of use: Look for features like a quick-release lever for folding and unfolding, and a lightweight design that allows easy movement and storage. Some extras, like a built-in iron rack, non-slip feet, and washable covers may also be important.
  • Height adjustments: Adjustable height settings on ironing boards that sit on the floor can be set at various heights, which can help reduce back strain and provide a comfortable workspace.
  • Sturdiness: Look for one with a solid frame and sturdy legs to provide stability and prevent wobbling during use. It’s a safety concern that shouldn’t be overlooked when you’re working with hot steamer irons.
  • Padding: Heat-resistant cotton or padded fabric that has moisture-wicking properties is crucial for effective ironing. Look for a board with thick, high-quality padding and a smooth cover. The padding should be firm enough to hold garments in place but soft enough to provide a cushioned surface.

FAQs

What is the best iron board?

Our tester found the Brabantia Ironing Board B to be the best overall clothing ironing board during testing due to its sturdiness, comfortable dimensions, adjustable iron rack, and the washable cover that fits tightly. It’s a great all-around iron that is a bit of an investment but should last you for years.

Do I need an ironing board?

If you iron clothes often, especially those tricky items like dress shirts or delicate fabrics, an ironing board is handy. It gives you a comfy, dedicated surface that makes the whole process smoother. If you’ve got the space for it, it’s definitely worth having. But if you're short on room or only iron every now and then, you might get by with alternatives like ironing mats or one of our picks for the best clothing steamers.

What’s the best material for an ironing board?

When it comes to choosing the best material for an ironing board, you’ll want something that balances durability and heat resistance. A good choice is a board with a metal mesh top because it allows steam to pass through and helps heat up evenly.

In terms of the cover, cotton blends or heat-resistant fabrics are great because they can withstand high temperatures and provide a smooth surface for ironing.

Other Irons We Tested

While we loved the Brabantia Ironing Board B for its durability and stability, we also tested the Brabantia Ironing Board A and Brabantia Ironing Board C models. All three models offer solid frames and wide legs, making them reliable choices. However, each has its own strengths and drawbacks:

Brabantia Ironing Board A: Although it’s sturdy and compact, its smaller surface area was a downside. Our tester found herself constantly rotating fabric to get the job done, which was less efficient for larger items.

Brabantia Ironing Board C: This board’s extra-large surface area was great for quickly ironing sheets and other large items. However, its size also made it quite heavy and cumbersome. It was too wide for smaller garments like blouses, and reaching all areas of the board was challenging. Additionally, the iron rest was not as user-friendly as we had hoped.

We also tested the Bartnelli Smart Hanger Tabletop Ironing Board. The hanging hook was a standout feature, and the cover, woven with steel in the cotton, allows you to rest the iron there for up to 10 minutes without risking damage. However, the legs are positioned so close to the nose of the board that our tester struggled with ironing larger items like dresses. In comparison to the Honey Can Do Tabletop Ironing Board, it didn’t quite measure up.

The full-size Bartnelli Heavy Duty Ironing Board impressed with its modern look, easy setup, and quiet operation. Unfortunately, it rocked severely back and forth during use, and the iron rest had a poorly designed structure. This instability and design flaw made it seem unsafe, so it didn’t make our final recommendations.

We also tried the Gorilla Grip Ironing Mat, which initially seemed promising. However, the cover puckered excessively, preventing the fabric from lying flat and hindering effective ironing.
