Family Home Gets New Layout, Fun Color Palette

This home in Greenwich, Conn., belongs to a family of four, but lacked the functionality to fit their lifestyle. So designer Claire Paquin opened the interior and installed multi-purpose pieces like a window seat with cabinets and a buffet for extra storage. Green and blue accents ensure that the design feels fun and youthful as well.

Back Exterior in Winter

This home in Greenwich, Connecticut belongs to a family of four. It needed to fit them all comfortably and maximize its ample outdoor space.

Back Exterior With Decks and Yard

This multi-story home also includes outdoor spaces on several levels: deck extensions off one of the upstairs bedrooms and the main living areas and a patio off of the basement.

Before: Green Living Room

This home's living room felt drab and uninspired, plus it was closed off from the floor's other living areas.

Contemporary Living Room and Blue Front Door

A blue front door sets the colorful stage for this lovely house that features bright accents and an open, airy feel. The original main floor was made up of a series of small rooms; the designers removed walls to create this layout.

Before: Living Room With Green Fireplace

Designers took what was once a dark, broken-up space into a light-filled, harmonious room.

Contemporary Foyer With Blue Shade

A foyer can be a nod to the rest of a home's decor. This one includes blue and yellow accents, that are featured in the living room and kitchen, as well as a light, airy feel.

White Transitional Living Room With Blue Shades

Every decision, from the floor stain to the accessories, was meant to keep this house feeling open and fresh. In the living room, pops of robin's egg blue and yellow make a cheery contrast with the crisp white walls.

Blue and Gray Transitional Living Room With Window Seat

In this living room, built-in seating and cabinets under the window add more storage and a sweet spot for daydreaming.

Contemporary Living Room With Yellow Stools

Small-scale patterns bring depth and dimension into this living room without overwhelming it. The sculptural pendant light doubles as artwork it's so pretty.

White Transitional Living Room With Hydrangeas

To masterfully layer patterns, pick a few colors, then keep prints within that palette. Here, in this living room, blue and yellow add fun and energy to the all-white furnishings.

White Open Plan Kitchen With Black Windows

To increase natural light in what was once a dark, closed-off kitchen, the designers decided not to include any upper cabinetry which allowed for an entire wall of windows.

Before: Kitchen With Fan

There's a lot going on in this cluttered kitchen with only a small stretch of window.

White Open Plan Kitchen With Blue Accents

The original kitchen of this home was dark, with next to no natural light, and closed off from the living room. During the renovation, the location of the kitchen was moved to be in the center of the house and walls taken down to create an open plan layout.

White Open Plan Kitchen With Glass Pendants

Pendant lights and a row of windows lead the eye down the length of this kitchen. There's so much natural light reflected off the white walls and cabinets.

White Kitchen With Stainless Steel Stove

White subway tiles and kitchen cabinets reflect the sunlight let in through big windows in this kitchen. They also act like a blank canvas on which to layer fun colored accessories.

White Open Plan Kitchen and Dining Room

The dining room opens directly onto the kitchen thanks to the removal of walls that connected these two room as well as the living room. Light flows freely around all the spaces.

Before: Dining Room With Child

Jarring colors needed a major fix in this home's dining room.

White Contemporary Dining Room With Wood Floor

Layers of cream, white and gray make this contemporary dining room sophisticated and light. On the floor, hardwood gives texture and a hint of warmth to the space.

Dining Room With Wood Floor and Art

Wood floors in this dining room feature warm, honey hues that are picked up by the metal cabinet pulls and the artwork.

Gray Dining Room Cabinets

Oversized metal pulls take this set of cabinets to a whole new stylish level. Their cool gray color is a nice backdrop for the large painting and glass vases.

Powder Room With Striped Floor

The show-stopper in this powder bathroom? The cool patterned floor. The pale colors and pink accents keep the lively zig-zag from overwhelming.

Before: Basement Laundry Room

Stuffed with, well, stuff, this laundry room feels like a chore.

White Mudroom and Bathroom

This basement used to be an unfinished laundry room and a small living space that doubled as a storage room. Now it's a mudroom, full bathroom, laundry room, bar area, TV room and kids’ playroom—so usable for a family of four!

Gray Basement Bathroom

This full bathroom is located on the residence's basement level. It feels trim and tailored with a floating vanity and charcoal gray floor. Mirrors and glass shower walls help visually open up the smaller room.

Before: Basement

No one wants to hang out in a basement that's meant for chores and storage.

Laundry Room With Blue Cabinets

This could be a boring laundry room, but it's not thanks to midnight blue cabinets and sassy green patterned wallpaper.

Silver Basement Bar With TV

Silvery metallics glam up this bar, part of the home's basement makeover that made the lower level the ultimate hang-out destination.
