Color Abounds in This Nashville Home

For almost a decade, Jenney and Burke Keaty lived on the ground floor of this house and rented out the rest of it as two separate apartments. As their family grew to include four young sons, they often imagined what they’d do if they could reclaim all 5,000 square feet for themselves. When they finally had the chance to take over, they were excited to make every square inch their own. The couple, both lawyers, wanted color, and lots of it: They used 27 different paints, starting with Begonia by Sherwin-Williams on the front door. Come on in and see the rest of the house!

A Vibrant Family Home

The Keatys, seen here with sons Trip, 11, Van, 8, and twins Jay and Car, 9, called in designer Rachel Fogarty to help bring their vision to life. “I wanted the house to feel cheerful, and for it to be a place where the kids could run wild without us worrying about any of the furniture,” says Jenney.

The Colorful and Cozy Family Room

A cozy velvet sectional from CoCoCo Home is the centerpiece of this hangout space. “It feels luxe, but I can confirm the fabric will hide a mark from a Sharpie!” says Jenney. Rachel pulled in more color with a blush built-in console (Calamine by Farrw & Ball) and a gallery wall of acrylic frames. The pink velvet swivel is from Anthropologie and the white coffee table and chandeliers are from CB2.

Jewel-Toned Glamour in the Dining Room

This space was designed to be a little more formal than the rest of the house. Jenney chose a deep jewel tone for the walls (Mature Grape by Sherwin-Williams) and gold and graphite chairs from West Elm. The extra-long table from One Kings Lane extends to 114 inches. “Burke is one of five, so we often have more than 30 people over for holiday meals,” says Jenney. The ostrich feather chandelier is from Regina Andrew. “The kids are amazed by it!”

A Kitchen That Embraces the Past

Jenney wanted to make the house their own but also pay homage to its past, so she kept most of the cabinets dark and painted a few bright green. Brass cabinet hardware matches the rods of the Shades of Light pendants. The counter stools are from CB2.

The Ultimate Work-Meets-Play Space

The study, designed for homework and hangouts, is full of fun surprises: Katie Kime wallpaper on the ceiling, cheetah side tables from Urban Outfitters and a big ice cream cone coin bank. “Burke got it for me as a Christmas gift. He loves ice cream so much that it’s become a bit of a family joke!” says Jenney. The rich blue walls and built-ins are painted Hidden Sapphire by Benjamin Moore. Two sets of pink velvet swivel chairs provide comfy spots to kick back when homework is done. "Everyone in my family is used to having lots of pink around," says Jenney. "It’s mood-lifting!"

Color in Every Corner

The railing on the staircase had to be raised to meet current code, so Rachel used the opportunity to paint the new balusters a fun yellow (Lemon Twist by Sherwin-Williams). “This is one of the first things you see when you walk through the door, so I wanted to make a statement,” she says. “Yellow is just happy.” The walls are painted Custis Salmon by Benjamin Moore.

A Light and Bright Main Bedroom

Sunshine pours into this room, so Jenney decided to keep it on the light and airy side with a soft pink wool rug from Layered Interior, painterly pillows from Laura Park Designs and a rattan McGee & Co. bed. The walls are painted Quietude by Sherwin-Williams, a serene shade of green-blue. "This wall color is definitely the most muted one in the house, but it works in here!" says Jenney. The cheeky wall art by Max Wanger is a nod to Burke’s favorite food.

Classic Meets Quirky in the Bathroom

Jenney and Rachel chose classic black-and-white marble for the floor because it looked like it could have been here all along. From there, they added shades of green on the walls (Supreme Green by Sherwin-Williams) and vanity (Greenbelt by Sherwin-Williams), poppy pink curtains made from Kate Roebuck fabric and colorful sconces by Sazerac Stitches. The tub is clad in polished nickel.

Cheerful Shades of Pink in the Laundry Room

“With four kids, we do a lot of laundry, and this room makes it feel like less of a chore,” says Jenney. Rachel went pink-on-pink for the cabinets and walls (Zany Pink and Bella Pink by Sherwin-Williams) and had ceramic penny tiles from Buy Floors Direct laid in a fun pattern. “It’s the right amount of unexpected without straying too far from timeless,” she says. The flowery flush mount fixture is from Stray Dog Designs.
