Make a Simple Floral Mother's Day Centerpiece
Materials Needed:
- wooden crate
- white craft paint
- paintbrush
- 1 large block floral foam
- plastic grocery bag
- 3 flats wheatgrass (available at health food stores)
- scissors
- utility knife
- 12 floral water tubes
- 12 spring flowers of your choice (I used tulips, irises, stock and liatris)
- large bowl
Paint Box
Brush two coats of white craft paint onto an unpainted wooden crate. Let dry completely between coats and before proceeding with the project.
Add Floral Foam
Line the painted crate with a plastic grocery bag. Using scissors, cut the bag around the edge and tuck sides into the crate. Discard bag top.
Fill a large bowl with water, then dip both ends of a large block of floral foam into the water until just saturated. Using a utility knife, cut the floral foam in half. Place both halves in the bottom of the plastic-lined wooden crate.
Add Wheatgrass
Remove wheatgrass from plastic flats. Place two large pieces of wheatgrass on either end of the crate, then cut the remaining block of grass into sections with a utility knife to fill empty spots in the crate.
Prepare Flowers
Cut flowers from your yard for the arrangement, or unwrap your grocery store blossoms. Pull the bottom set of leaves from each stem, then cut on a bias using scissors or floral shears.
Tip: The arrangement will look best with a variety of flower heights. Cut an inch or two from the bottom of each bloom, then adjust as necessary when you begin to assemble the arrangement.
Fill Water Tubes
Fill each plastic water tube, then add one prepared flower to each tube. Now you're ready to assemble the arrangement.
Assemble and Enjoy
Press each flower through the wheatgrass layer and into the floral foam, moving the flowers as necessary to create a pleasing arrangement.
Tip: Place thicker-stalked flowers in the back of the arrangement, and softer-stemmed flowers like tulips on the front and sides of the crate.
Store in a cool place out of direct sunlight until you're ready to use, then place in the center of your Mother's Day table and enjoy. For best results, add the flowers to the arrangement the day you plan to use the centerpiece. Depending on the flowers used, the arrangement can last between three days and one week. Remove the flowers and replenish the water tubes to extend the life of your centerpiece.
