How to Choose Cabinets

Kitchen Cabinet Organization

Having a clear idea of the type of pantry you want and the organizers and accessories you want to include to make it functional for your needs will put you on the right track to an organized kitchen.

Choose the space you want for your pantry and measure it to know exactly how much room you'll have so it'll be easier for you to decide on the type of pantry to plan for and the kinds of accessories you can add to it. You should decide if your pantry will be a double-door cabinet space, a classic pullout or a recessed cabinet built into the wall. Do you have the room for a walk-in pantry closet or will a reach-in be better? And what kind of shelves do you want?

Double-door cabinets are great for smaller spaces because they can contain shelving layers that stack one after the other, as well as shallow shelves on the insides of the door. Double-door cabinet pantries utilize the maximum amount of space without taking up a lot of room in your kitchen.

Classic pullouts do essentially the same thing, though they are slightly smaller. They are cabinets that have been converted into pantries with stackable pullout drawers for deep-set storage and shelving racks on the inside of the doors. These are great alternatives to consider for your pantry cabinet plans if a larger, more complicated pantry isn't practical for you.

Recessed or reach-in cabinet pantries are perfect in-between choices when a double-door cabinet pantry is too small and a walk-in closet pantry is too large. They're usually taller and hold shallow or only slightly deeper shelves with dividers to separate food items. Shelves can be adjusted to hold taller boxes and bottles, as well as canned goods and food items. Walk-in pantries have shallow shelving and lots of space, making organization really easy. Built-in storage bins work really well in walk-in pantries, and rolling drawers and shelves are great too.
