We Asked Organization Experts How They Keep Bathroom Cabinets Organized, and These Are the Products They Use
Plus, they dropped a few tips and tricks on how to get started.
Here at HGTV, we know the value of storage space and the prime real estate that it carries. That’s why when it comes to bathroom cabinets, it’s important to thoughtfully curate what goes in and what needs to come out of them. Doing a complete cleanout of your bathroom can be intimidating, which is why we asked Holly Blakey (@breathing.room.home on Instagram) and Samantha Pregenzer (@simplyorganized on Instagram) for some of their favorite products to help speed things along. And, they dropped some great advice to take to heart along the way:
- Clean out products that don’t belong: The first thing you need to do when clearing out your cabinets is figuring out what does and doesn’t belong there. According to Blakey and Pregenzer, bathrooms are for daily-use items — think of all the things that are part of your morning, evening, bathing or getting-ready routines. And since the temperature and humidity fluctuate in the bathroom, it may be best to leave out some bathroom-type items. “Certain medications, makeup products, perfumes, and backup inventory may actually last longer outside the bathroom environment, especially if the room gets very steamy,” Blakey says.
- Keep your household in mind: If you’re organizing your bathroom cabinets that are based on routines, then don’t forget that each household is unique. “A shared family bathroom will need very different systems than a primary suite,” Blakey says. “The goal is to reduce friction during busy mornings and evenings — not to create an Instagram-worthy cabinet.” Prioritize function over flair!
- Maximize vertical space: Cabinets are annoyingly tall but only have a few shelves in them, leaving lots of empty vertical space. At the same time, you don’t want to just pile things on top of each other. Blakey recommends anything stackable to help maximize all that empty space. Plus, you can create little backstock bins of extra items like toothpaste, soap and toilet paper to make things consistent without over-buying.
- Don’t forget to use the cabinet doors: Another great way to maximize empty space is to utilize those cabinet doors. “A few adhesive hooks or a small over-the-door organizer can add meaningful storage without taking up shelf space,” Pregenzer says. Add a few small face towels or store your extra toothpaste on the door to make good use of a usually overlooked space.

This organizer “brings hard-to-reach cabinet items forward, turning deep storage into something actually usable,” according to Blakey. Cabinets are often as deep as they are tall, and while we talked about maximizing vertical space, it’s also important to strategically think about organizing deep cabinets without things getting lost in the abyss.
This is a great way to use the cabinet door or even a wall if you don’t have the room. “I love that it’s adhesive so you don’t have to drill any holes,” Blakey says. Plus, you avoid tangling up the wires or harming other items with your heat tools.
