For the Love of Yellow

Go on and embrace full color. "As soon as I saw the homeowner's bright yellow dining room chairs, I knew I wanted to do an accent wall in a near-matching color. I love how it peeks through the open-back bookcase, says Hannah Masterson of Woodland House Design LLC.

Eye-Catching and Functional

Full of country charm, this white kitchen gets a healthy dose of color with a lovely yellow island. This island is a real workhorse. It has lots of prep surface, a wraparound counter that seats three, deep drawers and cabinets for storage, and pantry space on the back.

Hello Sunshine

Bring cheeriness to your kitchen with bright yellow cabinets. "Instead of blowing a bundle on new cabinets for this client's kitchen, I brought the sunshine with paint. Prep is everything when you redo stained cabinets — if you don't sand till they're supersmooth and then prime them, the paint could chip. A satin finish is easy to wipe down and also hides imperfections that glossy ones tend to highlight," says Amanda Louise Campbell of Amanda Louise Interiors.

Animated Style

Hand-poured cement tiles from Architectural Ceramics span the entire wall in yellow and blue diamonds, making the kitchen feel energetic and lively. The mismatched barstools add an eclectic vibe to the kitchen, but also served the budget well. The custom Lawson-Fenning seats with mustard yellow upholstery were a splurge but balanced by the more affordable backless wood-and-metal stools by Arteriors.

Lively + Bright

A span of graphic yellow wallpaper by Given Campbell makes a big statement. The cabinets and trim are painted a minty fresh hue, adding to the cheery factor of this laundry room. Penny tiles laid in a playful floral pattern add a striking contrast.

In the Golden Light

A burst of yellow plays up the sunlight pouring in through the windows. "This homeowner is drawn to a bunch of different styles — traditional, rustic, country and modern — so to combine them all in a way that's eclectic but still cohesive, I relied on a limited color palette of white, black and one pop of yellow," says Sarah Sherman Samuel.

Surrounding windows already drenched the built-in dining niche with sunshine, but custom chairs upholstered in a yellow diamond fabric from Romo brightened the spot even more. The table with a glass top and gleaming nickel-plated base keeps the breakfast nook bright and airy.

Happiest of Hues

Oh, what a fresh coat of paint can do. "When this buffet was plain wood, it looked completely traditional — not at all what my client wanted for her modern home. Redoing it in a citrusy yellow made it playful and contemporary," says Heidi Stukenberg of Lily Field Furniture.

Childhood Favorites

A fun take on a primary color palette, this playroom pairs a pale blue with mustard yellow and red-violet. Double-duty spaces are always a win. The daybed provides an extra sleeping area for guests and with its surrounding bright floral curtains, it's the perfect spot for hiding or playing pretend theater.

Seeing Red (in the Best Way)

So long builder's beige, this master bathroom douses itself in lipstick red from the walls to the cabinets. White countertops break up the color flow to give the eye a place to rest. A bold flower-and-bird-print fabric makes the Roman shade a showpiece, while gold Restoration Hardware mirrors and Ralph Lauren Home sconces hike up the glam factor.

Calm yet Vibrant Retreat

The nailhead-trimmed headboard serves as a warm, neutral backdrop to the contrasting and brightly colored bedding. Solid whites, black-and-white polka dots and vivid red deliver a decidedly modern note to the vintage-inspired bedroom. Unwilling to pay big bucks for a dramatic overhead light fixture, the homeowner cobbled together her own by popping a chandelier inside a metal orb from an antiques store.

Retro Red

In this remodeled kitchen, one-of-a-kind finds — a vintage cast-iron farmhouse sink and a 1950s supermarket sign — downplay the newness of the cabinets, granite counters and subway tile backsplash. Adding character and brilliant red color are a vintage Oriental rug, gingham café curtains and a retro clock.

Shades of pink and red combine on this porch for a sweet yet vibrant gathering spot. The '60s furniture set — a love seat and two chairs — is reupholstered in a simple graphic pattern and then painted Dishy Coral by Sherwin-Williams. Two ceramic garden stools serve as mini coffee tables.

Bold Patterns, Bold Color

Red takes a starring role in this eclectic dining room, from the tomato-hued chandelier to the Asian curtains and Oriental rug. The mix of patterns work together because the same shade of red runs throughout. White faux-bamboo chairs tone down the formality of the oval mahogany table.

Soaring Space Grounded in Color

In this 20-plus-foot ceiling, a dreamy 4-1/2-foot-tall bronze chandelier by Townsend Design helps fill the space. "This room didn't feel very cozy at first because of the tall ceiling," says homeowner Shannon Wilkins. She layered rugs (the red wool one is from a trip to Paris), mixed a vintage woven bench with modern nightstands by Noir, added green lamps from Circa Lighting and topped the white bedding with a soft pink coverlet from Cisco Home.

Palm Springs Inspiration

A gray sectional by Kardiel gives the living room a mid-century mod vibe; the plush wool rug underfoot — a vintage Flokati — makes it extra cozy. Bright oranges and reds add warmth to the cool blues and greens. The patterned pillows, hex ottomans from Blu Dot, molded plastic Eames rocker, and gallery wall of new and vintage deliver a plethora of fun to the living room.

Orange Know-How

A teal-and-white color palette set the scene in this oh-so-cheerful kitchen. Accents of orange — industrial-style barstools and graphic runners — complement the island and backsplash tiles. The two sphere pendant lights make a statement overhead and warm the space with a flash of gold set in the interior.

Delicate Brightness

A small-scale floral wallpaper and a white bed, both by Serena & Lily, and a dotted yellow fabric by Hable Construction for the curtains make the sweetest combination. The vintage painting introduces a hit of orange to the room, which is picked up in the pillows and throws on the bed.

Think in Color

With its hand-painted gold walls and touches of bright persimmon, the dining room is a lesson in traditional meets contemporary. To loosen up the formal 1980s dining set and the Parsons chairs (all inherited from family members), homeowner Emily McCarthy added slipcovers: two sewn from a graphic Kelly Wearstler fabric and four in monogrammed white denim.

Vibrant Sensibility

The wall color (Calluna by Farrow & Ball) shifts from gray to lavender depending on the light, but acts as the ultimate neutral backdrop to the myriad of patterns in this living room. Ottomans, upholstered in a zippy arrow-print, tuck in perfectly beneath the clear acrylic console, while a graphic wool area rug adds style underfoot. However, the showstoppers of the room are the orange-and-white curtains featuring an updated Damask print.

Modern Vintage

The house's original etched concrete walls, exposed beams and copper-hooded fireplace give this living space a distinctly retro look. A 1980s sofa is reupholstered in tufted leather and an ottoman was custom designed to match. A Study in Contrasts

Even the most contemporary of spaces gets a healthy dose of warmth with beautiful woods. In addition to the sleek wooden cabinets and island, a row of wood beams — one is load-bearing, the rest are decorative — add some visual oomph overhead. Stained a rich chocolate color, they contrast with the white-painted walls and ceiling. And don't forget the hand-hewn table crafted from Indonesian rosewood that brings a fully organic element to the kitchen’s sleek surfaces.

Always With the Glam

The formula for a dramatic room: paint the walls a super-dark color — like gunmetal gray — then incorporate white for contrast. To up the ante, throw in as much gold as you dare.
