Relaxed Urban Feel

This second-floor loft has a relaxed urban feel. “Downstairs we have the living room, which is a little bit more formal,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. “But up here you’re kind of away from everybody. It’s a lot more expansive, and you have the vaulted ceiling above you.”

A navy wool area rug with smaller black-and-white cowhide rug on top defines the loft seating area with vintage lounge chairs, custom-painted vintage coffee table and a pair of leather poufs. “I love the idea of this loft being a little more industrial than the rest of the house,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.

Punch of Plaid

The two vintage lounge chairs with rust-colored textured boucle pillows fit the classic-meets-modern vibe of this home. “I think these are from the 1960s, if not early 1970s,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. “We kept the original woodwork exactly as it was and recovered them in a classic plaid.”

A glass door in the loft opens to the balcony outside. “What’s spectacular about it is that it’s just on the top of the carport,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. “If you look straight up the street, you see all different types of architecture.”

Light-Filtering Blinds

The loft’s solar-powered venting skylights have white light-filtering solar blinds. The blinds allow soft, diffused light to enter the room and create a comfortable environment, so direct sunlight is never an issue.

Two black iron industrial-chic sideboards pushed together keep clutter out of sight. “The art was to minimize the fact you have this big TV in the middle,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.
