The room's color palette draws inspiration from the area rug, a contemporary and naturally stain-resistant floor covering that tells its own green story: The rug fibers are made from recycled soda bottles.

Designer linen throw pillows in the room's palette offer a cozy topping to organic bedding.

Shades of mocha in the area rug inspired both the decorative wall treatment and the bed shams.

"I wanted to add a lot of interest and texture in the master bedroom, so this room has a lot of layering," says interior designer Linda Woodrum. "It was really fun to pack so much into a small room, yet keep it clean and uncluttered."

Making the most of a smaller space, a series of raffia-upholstered squares stands in place of a traditional headboard. The wall treatment, crafted by carpenter David Brown, is easily updated with new upholstery fabric.

Exotic Cymbidium orchids greet guests at the room's entrance and provide subtle fragrance.

Old fencing is thoughtfully repurposed as the frame for an antiqued mirror, while a brown demilune table, too tall for the pint-size space, was trimmed down and spray-painted a vivid shade of turquoise.

A sliding French door leads to the bedroom's private sunbathing courtyard, which visually expands the room's square footage.

Cedar fencing and the home's own thin-set stone cladding provide a buffer of privacy in the courtyard, where all-weather stackable chaises, fashioned from a material that incorporates post-consumer bottle waste, provide a sunbathing area.

Crushed gravel creates a permeable surface that's timeless in style and also allows rainwater to seep through to a subsurface drainage system.

Chaise cushions are upholstered in durable Sunbrella fabrics that tie back to the master bedroom's color palette.

A 64-inch-tall Doggie Green Home mirrors the main home in both exterior cladding and crimped metal roofing. The structure was designed by the HGTV Green Home architect and constructed locally. A set of painted cedar stairs, crafted by carpenter David Brown, provide a rustic finishing touch.

A reading corner provides views of the courtyard and a spot to cuddle up in a cozy throw. Graphic print pillows continue Linda's layering effort, while artwork by Debbie Corbo pops with drama.

An antiqued mirror box nightstand displays a collection of colorful curios.

Classic reading material becomes an intriguing design element when stacked in a serving tray and propped atop an ottoman.

A rustic wall shelf displays handwoven seagrass baskets, the ideal place to store linens, towels and trinkets.

Creating drama and the illusion of never-ending space, only a small slice of the master bedroom is visible from the living room.

Colorful mixed-media artwork by Georgia-born Lyda Kathryn Fortson sparks the imagination and serves as a nice foil to the room's traditional features.

A trio of vibrant sky blue glass votive holders sparkles in midday sunlight.

Although designed to resemble a separate cottage, the master bedroom is connected, via views, to the home's most social spaces.

Smart use of square footage makes a smaller bedroom live large. A glass wall visually extends the space.
