If You Have $1,500 to Spend on a Stand Mixer...
The Smeg x Dolce & Gabbana kitchen appliance collection comes with an explosion of bright colors and quite a hefty price tag, but we can't stop gawking over it.
Smeg USA
For more than 70 years, Italian manufacturer Smeg has been crafting beautiful domestic kitchen appliances, from refrigerators to electric tea kettles. If you don't recognize the name, then you'll definitely recognize the company's iconic retro designs often soaked in a rainbow of colors. So, it makes perfect sense that Smeg would collaborate with Italian luxury fashion brand Dolce & Gabbana to create a collection of kitchen statement pieces adorned with the fashion powerhouse's signature decorative style.
Launching last spring, the Sicily is My Love collection boasts a handful of small appliances (eight are available to purchase right now) all decorated with gold lemons, citrus fruits, prickly pears and bright red cherries. These traditional Sicilian decorations are framed in triangular motifs called crocchi. According to Smeg, you'll also notice delicate floral motifs inspired by the coasts and landscapes of Southern Italy, surrounded by ornamental friezes and picturesque ruins of Greece's Valley of Temples. These are just a few of the symbols of an aesthetic most notably associated with Sicily, home to both Smeg and Dolce & Gabbana.
The price tag on these countertop appliances was shocking but not surprising at the same time. With a starting price of $650 (that's for a two-slice toaster, by the way), these aren't probably in your budget. They're certainly not in mine. We can still totally gawk at the stunning designs and craftsmanship and dream we had a toaster that could be the centerpiece of the kitchen (instead of stowed away in a cabinet).
Now, if you really have a love for eccentric and one-of-a-kind home decor, you should browse the collection's refrigerators, found only at Bergdorf Goodman. Each unique, hand-painted refrigerator is priced at $50,000 with a $495 shipping charge. (But once you spend $50,000, what's another 500 bucks?)
Check out some of my favorites from the collection, and really take a look at the intricate details of each design. Seeing these in my kitchen every day would certainly spice up my morning routine!
