Fresh Family-Friendly Basement
Contemporary Living Room with Zebrawood Coffee Table
A striking zebrawood coffee table is the centerpiece in this minimally furnished, contemporary living room. A desk offers a space to work and a door leads outside to a lovely patio garden.
Go contemporary, go luxe, and have access to the outdoors, and both generations will want to spend time together as one family found after designer Sarah Barnard took charge and fashioned a light-filled indoor-outdoor room.
What were the main items on this family's wish list?
Indoor/outdoor experience; space for entertaining; family-friendly; space for parents and children to watch TV together.
What was the single largest challenge for this space?
Keeping the basement light and bright.
What was your biggest obstacle in this room?
Providing lots of seating via a sectional and occasional chair and having a desk that’s integral with the entertainment console.
How does the end result match up with your original vision?
I’m a super-detailed over-planner, so everything came in the right color and size by the deadline! It’s always nice when things go as planned.
What surprised you the most about this project?
This project allowed me to create a really appropriable family space that incorporates the owners’ interests and style.
What are the hidden gems?
The side table with real shagreen top, hand-carved mahogany conch shell from Negril, tonal textiles that come across as very rich looking visually.
