PHILOSOPHY

Outside Space NYC is a landscape design company and plant shop focused on cultivating urban gardens in New York. We design customized spaces with New York City climate and architecture in mind, all with the goal of creating a multi-seasonal ecosystem full of color and texture perfect for rooftops, terraces, balconies, and back and front-yard gardens. Our designs predominantly feature plants and flowers native to the region, though we can also incorporate exotic and semi-exotic species, as well as other materials like water, lighting, carpentry, and masonry.

GARDEN CENTER

Additionally, our brick-and-mortar Garden Center (located in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn) exists as a neighborhood sanctuary for plants, animals, and people to physically interact with the cultivated natural world. This in-person space offers a tactile, sensory experience that simply isn’t possible online, and enables home gardeners — from the novice to the seasoned green thumb — to discover rare plants, explore unlikely combinations, and learn from human experts. We’re always open to trying on new ideas for size, and hope to equip our customers with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to continue exploring their relationship with their garden and tune into blooming, watering, plant interaction, and more.

MEET THE OWNERS

Edward Jones studied architecture in the UK and has been designing outdoor spaces for over 30 years. His current practice brings together plants, flowers, trees, and wood, masonry, as well as creative solutions for soil, water, and sun, no matter the constraints — be it the English countryside or an NYC rooftop garden.

Irene Kalina is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design and studied horticulture at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Her current landscape design work combines her background in advertising, graphic design, and horticulture to create multi-seasonal gardens focused on texture, color, and species interaction.
