Hauntingly Impressive Treats

Halloween is the perfect time to whip up some spooky-cute cupcakes, but who has time for homemade treats between the costume chaos and pumpkin carving? Fear not — we’ve got you covered! This decorating guide is box-mix and canned-frosting friendly. Our techniques use basic decorator piping tips, candy and cookies to fashion edible monsters and ghouls.

First up: Transform a batch of ordinary chocolate cupcakes into a spectral sight. Start by swirling a tall mound of white buttercream from base to peak using a 1/2" round decorator tip (Ateco #808). Add black candy beads for eyes and a mouth fashioned from a large black confetti sprinkle, frozen in a playful mid-boo expression.

Candy Corn Cupcakes

Sweeten your Halloween with these candy corn-inspired cupcakes. Tint a box of white cake mix with orange or yellow food coloring and bake as directed. Tint three cans of white vanilla frosting: one orange, one yellow and leave one plain. Place each frosting in a separate piping bag fitted with large, closed star tips for a ruffled effect (Ateco #849). Pipe a large swirl of orange buttercream, followed by a smaller swirl of yellow buttercream. Finish with a small white star on top. These cupcakes have all the hues of candy corn and are perfect for adding lots of color to your spooky celebrations.

Colorful Monster Cupcakes

These furry monster cupcakes are the opposite of scary and sure to bring a smile. Use tinted buttercream and a grass piping tip (Ateco #259) to create fluffy, hair-like texture that makes these treats look almost cuddly. With the decorator tip close to the cupcake’s surface, squeeze the bag and pull in an upward motion to create strands of buttercream. Repeat until the cupcake is covered in "fur." Decorate with playful candy eyeballs and quirky antennae made with colorful wooden swizzle sticks.

Perfectly Simple Pumpkins

Forget the messy carving and opt for some neatly piped pumpkin cupcakes instead. Tint one can of store-bought white vanilla frosting with orange food coloring and leave a second can white. Transfer each color to piping bags fitted with 1/2” plain round decorator tips (Ateco #808). On half of the cupcakes, use the orange frosting to pipe two short lines on the outside edges of the cupcakes. Pipe two more slightly longer lines traveling inward. Finally, pipe a long line down the center to create the pumpkin's silhouette. Repeat the process with the white frosting and the remaining cupcakes. Insert a pretzel twist into the top for a pumpkin stem.

Witch Hat Cupcakes

Cast a delicious spell with these witchy treats. Pipe a swirl of green buttercream using a large, closed star decorator piping tip (Ateco #849) and cover with spooky Halloween-hued sprinkles. Create the hat with a cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookie for the brim and a mini sugar cone dipped in black melted candy. While the candy is still wet, roll the cone in black sanding sugar. Place the cone on the cookie, wrap a yellow sour lace candy around the base for a hatband, and secure it with leftover melted candy. Add a small bat sprinkle for the perfect witchy touch.

Stenciled Cupcakes

This spooky assortment is made with a popular "flat icing" hack that has taken social media by storm. Frost cupcakes with a tall swirl of yellow buttercream then turn them upside down and flatten on parchment paper. Refrigerate until firm. Once firmly chilled, turn them right side up to reveal a perfectly flat surface. Use Halloween-themed stencils and spread black buttercream over them to create spooky images. Lift the stencil to reveal your eerie design.

Graveyard Cupcakes

Unearth some ghoulish fun with cupcakes featuring creepy skeleton hands emerging from the earth. Melt white candy coating and pour it into a skeleton bone mold, then freeze for 10 minutes and pop them out. Frost chocolate cupcakes with your choice of buttercream and dip the tops in crushed chocolate cookie crumbs — this creates a dirt-like effect. Make a small divot in the top center and insert the eerie skeleton arms, making them look like they’re clawing their way out of the ground. Serve with tiny shovel spoons for a chillingly delightful grave-digging experience.

Spiderweb Treats

Spinning a web on a cupcake is easier than you might think. Melt one can of store-bought white frosting in the microwave for about one minute. Separate 1/4 cup of frosting and tint with black food coloring, then transfer it to a piping bag or zip-top bag with a tiny hole snipped in the corner. Tint the remaining frosting with a bright orange food coloring. Dip the tops of your cupcakes in the orange frosting, then drizzle spirals of black frosting on top. Use a toothpick to drag through the spiral to create an intricate spiderweb. Top with candy spiders for an extra spooky touch. If you can’t find candy spiders ready-made, they’re simple to make using a spider-motif candy mold and black candy melting wafers. Just melt the candy, pour it into the molds and freeze until set. Pop them out and use them as cupcake toppers.

Vampire Fang Cupcakes

Here’s something to sink your teeth into — literally! Bake up a dozen cupcakes and pipe a swirling ruffle of red buttercream on half of them. Then cut plastic vampire fangs at the hinge and arrange them on top. For the other half, pipe a plain swirl of white frosting and use red decorator gel to create two well-spaced bite marks. Cut additional vampire fangs and place one half on top of each cupcake, aligning the fangs with the red gel bite marks for a blood-sucking effect.
