Repurposed Fireplace
If you have an antique fireplace or a fireplace that’s boarded up, turn it into a cozy little nook for your pup. Author and salad aficionado Julia Sherman turned her fireplace into the perfect space for her dog.
Chic Food Station
Instead of trying to hide food and water bowls, give them a dedicated, well-designed space. We love the integrated food station with matching tile in this laundry room. Elevating the food and water bowls is also healthier for pups, especially seniors with limited flexibility.
Studio With Dog Nook
This art studio features an adorable little cutout with a dog bed and pillows, perfect for the family pet to relax while the homeowner paints.
Under the Stairs
The space under the stairs is usually wasted, especially if it’s too small for a closet. But it’s the perfect size for a cozy dog bed. This homeowner added an additional pull-out drawer for food bowls and treats.
Laundry Room Pet Area
If you don’t have a mudroom or space in the kitchen for a pet area, the laundry room is a great alternative. HGTV Smart Home 2014 featured a laundry room with a dog bed integrated into the cabinetry.

Pet-Friendly Porch
This porch features a bench with clever cutouts beneath the seat, creating the perfect spot for a pup to cool off in the summer heat.
Total Pet Pad
HGTV Dream Home 2019 is a dream for both humans and pets. Designer Brian Patrick Flynn turned the space underneath the stairs to the upper floor into a dedicated pet pad with a rustic-chic doggie gate.

Pull-Out Food Station
If you don’t have space to leave food bowls out, hide them in plain sight! This window seat features a secret pull-out drawer with bowls. While hiding food bowls between meal times is a great storage hack, pets should have access to a water bowl 24/7.
Upholstered Doggie Crate
Crates can be an eyesore, but you can conceal them. This homeowner created a custom upholstered bench to house three small dog crates in a chic way.
Kitchen Built-In
Most dogs love to be close (if not 100% underfoot) to their humans. If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, why not create a special place just for your pup? This kitchen features a doggie built-in that blends in with the traditional style of the space with matching cabinet molding.
Dream Pet Niche
HGTV Dream Home 2014 featured split-level stairs with dead space underneath, so designer Brian Patrick Flynn created a pet niche with Dutch doors that double as a doggie gate.

Kitchen Island Built-In
Typically, we see kitchen island built-ins created for housing cookbooks, but we love how this homeowner turned the otherwise hollow space in the kitchen island into a dedicated doggie alcove.
Teeny Tiny Retreat
How cute is this cubby? The homeowners made great use of the otherwise wasted space under the stairs, and the family dog gets its own hideaway. These den-like retreats are great for helping dogs calm down during loud events such as thunderstorms, fireworks or parties.
Hidden Litter Box
If you’re a cat person, you know that just because you create a cute nook for your cat doesn't mean your cat will use it. But one thing you can control is where to put the litter box. This window bench seat is actually a cabinet that houses kitty litter, extra scoops and a litter box. The cabinet doors can remain closed as there is a secret cat entrance on the side.
Upcycled Furniture
If you don’t have space or the budget to create a dedicated pet area, make a cozy nook out of furniture. Our friends at DIY Network have some great ideas and how-tos for turning vintage furniture into pet beds that are as functional as they are cute.
