Gathering the Materials

You will need: 20”x20” white tissue paper (10 sheets for 1 large flower, 10 sheets for 4 medium flowers, 10 sheets for 16 small flowers) / 20”x20” yellow tissue paper (1 sheet for 1 large flower, 1 sheet for 4 medium flowers, 1 sheet for 16 small flowers) / scissors / cable ties / pinking shears (optional) / clear filament or fishing line / pipe cleaners / double stick tape / paper lantern

Preparing the Tissue Paper

Stack the sheets of tissue paper evenly together. For the large flowers, leave the sheets whole. For the medium flowers, the sheets should be cut in half vertically and horizontally yielding 4 10”x10” squares. For smaller flowers, cut each of the medium stacks in half vertically and horizontally yielding 16 5”x5” squares. Cut the two vertical sides of the yellow paper into fringe about 1/2 wide and 1-2 inches long.

Folding the Tissue Paper

Staring at your horizontal edge, fold the paper into an accordion. For the large flowers, each fold should be about 1 1/2 inches wide. The medium flowers should have a fold about 1 inch wide. The small flowers should have a fold about 1/2 inch wide.

Securing the Tissue Paper

Use a cable tie to gather the folds together at the center. Tighten the cable tie so that is fits snugly, but does not pinch the paper.

Finishing the Edges

Use scissors or pinking shears to curve the edges to resemble petals. Using pinking shears will zig zag the edges. This is an optional step, but makes a big difference in the overall look of the finished product.

Attaching the Fishing Line

Attach a couple yards of fishing line to the cable tie before you begin shaping the flower.

Shaping the Yellow Tissue

Fan open the accordion and gently pull the yellow paper up and towards the center. Gather it together tightly in the center.

Pull the white sheets up and toward the center individually alternating from one side to the other.

Finessing the Finished Flower

Pull together the edges of the paper on either end to make it look more round. Fluff the sheets as necessary.

Adding Pipe Cleaner Stems

Pull the last sheet of paper from both sides down and over the tail of the cable tie. Twist it tightly. Wrap a pipe cleaner around the paper and cable tie and twist it tightly as close to the base of the flower as possible. Wrap the cable tie around the remaining paper and cable tie.

Embellishing the Paper Lantern

Add medium and small flowers to a paper lantern. Start by attaching the medium flower with double stick tape applied to the back of the last sheets of paper. Note: cut away any tail of the cable tie that remains. Press the medium flower to the center of the paper lantern with one hand inside the lantern. Secure 3-4 small flowers in the same manner to the top and bottom of the medium flower in a pattern of your choosing.

Finishing Touches

Hang the embellished paper lantern using clear filament and pushpins in the ceiling. Fill in the surrounding space with large and medium flowers hung on filament and attached to the ceiling with a push pin. Fill vases (or in our case, wine bottles) with medium and small flowers on pipe cleaner stems. Add hearts for a sweet Valentine’s Day look.

Finishing Touches

Hang the embellished paper lantern first using clear filament and pushpins in the ceiling. Fill in the surrounding space with large and medium flowers hung on filament and attached to the ceiling with a push pin. Fill vases (or in our case, wine bottles) with medium and small flowers on pipe cleaner stems. Add "sparklers" made from silver metallic pipe cleaners for a New Year’s look. Play around with this core concept for more variations to fit your special holiday or celebratory gathering. This project lends itself well to baby showers, bridal showers and children's birthday parties.
