Step Inside a Western-Inspired Home With Wall-to-Wall Wallpaper

Nadia and David Youngson first visited Ojai, California, on vacation eight years ago, and they fell in love with the area’s rugged mountains and legendary sunsets. “I’m into horses and David is a mountain biker, so we were drawn to the lifestyle here,” says Nadia.

They eventually bought this 1,300-square-foot Spanish bungalow as a winter escape from their home in British Columbia, and they looked to the landscape for design inspiration. “We wanted to bring the rusty hues and rich textures inside,” Nadia says. Working with designer Kirsten Blazek, they set the stage with archways, hemlock ceilings and patterned wallpaper, then they filled the rooms with antiques, textiles and art that speaks to the American West. “The house has such a grounding energy,” says Nadia. “It’s our sanctuary.”

A bold botanical wallpaper from House of Hackney establishes the color palette in this space, making way for a sectional from Maiden Home, a tile and wood coffee table from 1stDibs and a paper thread pendant from Ponce Studio.

This archway directs everyone’s eyes from the living room to the dining room — and a painting by local artist Logan Maxwell Hagege. The scalloped pendant is by L’Aviva. The walls are painted Dover White by Sherwin-Williams.

A custom stained oak island from Bananas & Hammocks provides plenty of counter space for cooking and hosting. "The kitchen is such a hub, and it’s one of David’s favorite places to work from home," Nadia says. The runners are from Rug & Kilim, and the pendants are vintage Pamono. The cabinets are painted Roycroft Brass by Sherwin-Williams. "I wouldn’t have chosen this shade of muted green for the cabinets on my own, but it works perfectly with the other colors in the house!"

David was born in Scotland, so Kirsten chose tartan fabric from Maharam for the banquette. The custom dining table has a stoneware base, “which means it never gets dinged up by people’s shoes!” Nadia says. Robert Kime wallpaper adds a little texture.

This room doesn’t get much natural light, so Kirsten leaned into the moody vibe with a darker color palette, starting with wallpaper from Counterpart Studios. (It has a moon motif, which is fitting because Ojai means “moon.”) She layered in cozy patterns, like a vintage kantha blanket and a rug from Mehraban. The bed is from Lulu and Georgia.
