A Rainbow of Mudroom Design Ideas That Make an Entrance

Make your mudroom more than just a storage space. With a few daring choices — from wallpaper and vibrant paint shades to pops of colorful decor — these workhorse rooms can also be beacons of bold design in your home. Designer Emily Tucker drew inspiration from exterior of the house when she chose this radiant hue. For the built-in storage in this Boulder, Colorado, mudroom, she chose Million Dollar Red by Benjamin Moore to match the siding you can see out the windows. “I love a bold color in a heavily used space that you don’t spend a lot of time in,” she says.

Designer Naomi Stein wanted to make a big impact in her Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, client’s main entrance, so she color-drenched it in a dusty peach-pink (Savannah Clay by Benjamin Moore). “Painting the trim, the doors and the wall paneling one color helps create consistency, to soften the bold floor tile pattern,” she says. “Plus white cabinets in a mudroom get dirty really fast. Color takes a beating a little better!”

Designer Meg Braff paired a zippy tangerine colored Thibaut wallpaper with a mint-green bench cushion in this Locust Valley, New York, entryway. The room hints at the palette that follows in the rest of the house, she says.

A mudroom is a low-stakes place to try daring new ideas. Kentville, Nova Scotia, designer Natalie Owens used a cheery yellow (Stuart Gold by Benjamin Moore) on the hall tree, then built the fun from there. “We thought about toning it down with a subtle wallpaper,” she says, “but this one from Kravet hit just right.”

Designer Ariel Okin knew exactly how to make her family’s Westchester County, New York, mudroom one of the happiest spots in the house: She’d color it like the yard outside! She complemented the grassy green paint (Breakfast Room Green by Farrow & Ball) with blue striped wallpaper, also by Farrow & Ball.

Wall-to-wall blue makes for a breezy entry to this Greenwich, Connecticut, home. “Pulling a color from a wallpaper you love, like we did here, is a great alternative to generic white,” says designer Whitney McNell. The botanicalprint wallpaper is from Schumacher; the paint is Slate Blue by Benjamin Moore.
