Ingredients

Serves 8

  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 1-2 sleeves saltines, or about 40-80 crackers
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 1/3 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts, pretzels or other salty toppings

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray.

Arrange saltines in a single layer on the cookie sheet, covering the entire bottom of the pan.

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar together and boil for a few minutes, stirring occasionally until the mixture turns a caramel color.

Remove the mixture from the heat and pour over the crackers, covering them evenly. Use a spatula to spread the caramel mixture if needed.

Bake in the oven for 3-5 minutes or until the caramel topping beginss to bubble.

Remove cookie sheet from oven and pour chocolate chips on top of the caramel immediately. After the chips have melted a bit, use a spatula or knife to spread the chocolate evenly over the caramel.

Sprinkle chopped nuts, chopped pretzels or other desired topping on top of the chocolate while hot. Then place the cookie sheet in the freezer until the chocolate becomes completely cold and solid, about 20-30 minutes. The chocolate and caramel should form into a solid sheet.

Remove cookie sheet from freezer and break cracker candy into rough pieces. Store in an airtight container.
