Tour a New Jersey Kitchen Awash With Beachy Blues
Ocean-inspired hues set the tone in this coastal kitchen. Step inside with HGTV Magazine.
When Mary Ann Betsch and Terry Haas renovated their New Jersey Shore kitchen, they didn’t have to look far for inspiration: “We wanted it to evoke the ocean,” says Mary Ann. The couple (pictured with their son, Jote, 13) wanted an open floor plan and a comfortable-yet-chic place to gather with friends and family.

They tapped friend and former neighbor Isabella Patrick to tackle the transformation, and Isabella stuck with clean lines, modern materials and subtle nods to the sea. “It’s just a wink,” she says. “You feel like you’re at the beach, but it’s not beachy.”

The Design Details
Blue on Blue
Isabella helped find tiles to match the breezy hue of the cabinets (Blue Echo by Benjamin Moore). “They have similar undertones, which creates the feeling of waves arriving ashore,” she says. The black pulls are from Belwith and Hickory Hardware.
Tile Takeover
“The glossy finish gives the space a water-like glimmer,” says Isabella of the textured ceramic tiles from Nemo Tile. She installed them all the way to the ceiling for added drama — and to let the custom wood hood pop. The sconces are from Rejuvenation.

Extra-Large Island
The couple sifted through dozens of slabs at New York Stone and was drawn to this taupe quartzite countertop. “It has beautiful swooshes and a sandy look to it,” Mary Ann says. And it’s almost 10 feet long. “We do all the prep, serving and eating right here!” The oversize brass pendants are from Shades of Light.
