Tour a South Carolina Home Filled With Whimsy (and Rabbits)

Designer Whitney Williams Cole was born on Easter, and she’s been going down a decorating rabbit hole ever since. “Bunnies were pushed on me as a kid, and I never resisted!” she says. When she and her husband, Charles, bought this 4,200-square-foot ranch in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, she decided to fully embrace the theme. “It was time to go all in,” she says. Whitney filled the space with little (and big!) nods to bunnies, along with refurbished vintage furniture and the couple’s existing art collection. Their children, Matilda, 11, Louisa, 10, and Talmadge, 7, are in full support of all the rabbits — they even have a couple of real ones! “Their names are Dozer and Harriet,” says Whitney. “And they feel very at home here!”

The blue sofa in Whitney's living room was her grandmother's from the 1950s. Whitney had it reupholstered in velvet for this space, but it’s had many looks over the years. “We’ve probably recovered it 50 times,” she says.

Whitney spends a lot of time cooking and baking (she used to sell pies at a farmers’ market), so she went with her favorite color combo here. “I’ve always loved pink and green together,” she says. (The island base is painted Oleander by Sherwin-Williams.) She reserves the walnut top for working, not family meals: “My trick to get everyone to sit at the table is to only put one stool at the island!” she says. The mirror is from Worlds Away.

Sets can be overrated: Whitney combined a simple IKEA dining table with Safavieh chairs covered in fabrics from Schumacher and China Seas. The chandelier is from Visual Comfort & Co. Pink and green are on display again in this room with the cabinets and door trim painted Gondola Ride and Fruited Plains by Benjamin Moore, respectively.

This Lee Jofa wallpaper, featuring artist Hunt Slonem’s bunny figures, has been on Whitney’s wish list for a while. “One of his tiny original pieces will set you back a pretty penny, so this was the next best thing!” she says. A portrait of the family’s late dog by Paint Your Life is reflected in the mirror. The doorway leads to a family room with a comfy coral sectional from Joybird.

“The purple paint (Brinjal by Farrow & Ball) adds lots of warmth, but it’s still fun and not overly stuffy,” says Whitney. She paired it with vintage chairs covered in Alan Campbell fabric and palm lamps from Worlds Away. The drapery fabric is Schumacher. "I wanted the bedroom to look like an adult space but still feel happy, cozy and warm."

Whitney originally bought the Anthropologie bench for a client but it didn’t work for their space. “That was a happy accident,” she says.
