  • 1 eight-inch floral foam sphere
  • 36 wooden florist picks
  • 6 colorful party hats
  • colorful rolls of crepe paper or ribbon

Waterproof Paper Hats

To slightly waterproof the paper hats, align the bottom with packaging tape, folding to cover both front and back of the hats (this step can be skipped if using silk flowers).

Create Streamers

To create streamers, fold 2 to 3 feet of crepe paper into fourths, and cut lengthwise. If using ribbon, cut several 2- to 3-foot streamers.

Attach Streamers

For five of the cones, secure streamers on the inside of the hats using tape (image 1). For the sixth cone, secure a long piece of rope (image 2), which will be used to hang the finished piñata.

Form Into Cones

Wrap the party hats back into cone shapes, overlapping the sides and making them slightly longer than the original hats. With a marker, place four dots on equal sides of the cones.

Attach Florist Picks

Opening the cones back up, tightly tape wooden florist picks on top of the dots with sharp sides pointing down. Wrap cones back together and secure the seam with packaging tape. Set aside.

Soak Florist Foam

Soak florist foam for 10-15 minutes in a sink full of water and let drain slightly to remove excess moisture (this step can be skipped if using silk flowers).

Attach Rope

Waterproof your work surface with garbage bags or a vinyl tablecloth, and securely wrap the florist foam with rope to create a cradle to support its weight for hanging.

Attach Cones

Attach all five cones on each side of the foam orb (image 1), attaching the top cone with rope as hanging support (image 2). Set the bottom cone aside until the end of the project.

Cut Flower Stems

Cut flower stems to 3 inches long at an angle to easily attach into foam. Other floral varietals may require additional wooden picks to assist in piercing the foam.

Add Flowers and Last Cone

Tightly pack flowers one at a time around the foam until completely covered, adding the bottom cone and final flowers after the piñata is hanging in place (images 1 and 2).
