In the simplest terms, "birthing" a quilt refers to a quilt that is "bound" pillowcase style.

Figure A

  • Layer the quilt top and backing, right sides together, with a layer of batting on top (figure A).

  • Figure B

  • Sew a 3/4-inch seam allowance all the way around the quilt (figure B) leaving enough of an opening to fit your hand in.

  • Figure C

  • Invert the whole sandwich (quilt top, backing and batting) right side out (figure C).

  • Hand stitch the opening closed.
